Anthropic Book Training Settlement

A federal judge has approved a $1.5 billion copyright settlement in which artificial intelligence company Anthropic will pay thousands of authors about $3,000 per book after using pirated copies of their works to train its Claude chatbot.

Bestselling thriller novelist Andrea Bartz first brought the suit with two other authors in 2024. It’s the first major settlement in dozens of AI copyright lawsuits that are still working their way through courts.
Somewhat ironic given recent claims from Anthropic about others training their AI on its work.

Hmmm. why just 3,000 per book and not 3,000 per book multiplied by the number of devices that were used to train the models with this data?
@Manx, are you suggesting anything close to $3,000 per book is even close to a start? Hopefully not. $1,500,000,000 (yep, that's 1.5 billion spelled out) is a drop in the bucket for any AI company (worth over a trillion and counting) who decided ON THEIR OWN to steal other's copyrighted IP (that's intellectual property) with nothing more than, well....
Please, do not get me started with something as blatant as legalities like what the taxpayer cost is for these offending companies do. (Yes, if you happen to hold stock in them you probably made out.) nOh, and please, do not speak about what these data centers may be doing in terms of climatology. $3,000 - PER BOOK - isn't a start.
@Manx I agree that $3,000 sounds low, but is this actually a start? Or is it the end? It seems to me that they bought themselves licenses to all these books without even having to contact the authors and negotiate. The settlement is an amazing deal for Anthropic.
Deletion of all data retained, all models trained, and disgorgement of all revenues attained would be treating it under the standard terms for the proceeds of crime.
