Tahoe Contact Posters
I continue to have problems with Contacts in Tahoe. The latest issue is that the Messages app constantly displays a banner showing that one of my contacts has updated her poster. I don’t want to use it; I want to keep the photo that I chose. But clicking the × button does not dismiss the New poster available from [Person] banner. It remains anchored atop that conversation.
Sidenote: I hate that it wants me to click Update Contact but that the image shown is the old photo. How can I commit to the new photo without even knowing what it looks like? How can I undo if I don’t like it?
Sidenote 2: I’m also getting repeated Siri found an event banners in Messages, but they go away after about three clicks. They’re extra annoying because (unlike above) they animate in again each time I dismiss them, and they’re for events that are already on my calendar.
I thought maybe I could fix things by going into the Contacts app. Unfortunately, the Contact Photo & Poster button there is inoperative. Sometimes it flickers when I click it. Sometimes nothing happens at all. Sometimes after clicking the button it will open the photo chooser sheet for the next contact that I view.
I just want a single setting to let me choose my own photos. I never want to use a poster or be notified that one has changed.
Ternus, said he was committed to building on the company’s momentum in the entertainment business when he takes the helm of the iPhone maker in September […]
“I think we have such tremendous momentum right now in Apple TV,” Ternus told Reuters on the red carpet at the premiere of the fourth season of Ted Lasso. “There’s so many amazing shows, so many amazing characters and stories, and so we’re just going to keep building on the momentum.”
Have we seen any indication yet that he cares about software?

Whether or not John Ternus cares about software, I think it's a lot easier and advantageous to say "we're amazing and we're going to keep being amazing" than "we know our software sucks, we're working on it". While him saying it is indication that he does care, him not saying it is not indication that he doesn't care.
@Jesper I don’t mean that he should say that; I’m just looking for an indication that he understands and appreciates software in general. With Cook, I got the sense that it was in the background and he just didn’t think about it much. He never seemed as excited about it as he was about celebrities, watch bands, and health.
That's fair enough, but I suspect we would have to check internal indicators of what developer life is like. Right now, they're probably too wrapped up in vacations and finishing the 27 OSes. It'll be interesting to see how daily life for the software engineers inside Apple changes, and, if there's been some group of people who have been chomping at the bit to actually change the way that things work or bugs are addressed, if they are given more power or influence. Any non-internal, more PR-related message just follows the playbook from WWDC, which is: general stability improvements, AI and child safety.
It is true that if Ternus also doesn't see anything wrong in the current software malaise, we may stay in the dark ages for quite some time.
He has to say those words in this time and place. When announcing the new season of something that was already well underway before he had any power, of course he has to support it.
Total distraction or not, he's stuck with it for a while. I just want to see him direct the company to un-break the app.
The actual Apple TV app was fantastic when they first made it around iOS 15 or so. They had no dog in the fight so the only goal was to make it easy to watch what you want.
Well guess what happened when they started their own streaming service. Suffice it to say that they no longer care what you want to see.
I know this post was supposed to be about contacts, but the Apple TV priorities are still a good example.
It's not important to them that Contacts work really well. That doesn't make them any more money. iOS 27 is a good sign, but a lot of the best parts can be contributed to them tasking an AI to finally do some of the bug fixing they apparently can't be arsed to do anymore.
@bart, first, I think I agree with the sentiment, particularly what this post is about. I did a quick search and would like to correct you, assuming you are talking about the Apple TV app (media player), Apple TV (the hardware) or Apple TV+ (original content that requires a subscription). Anyways, from Wikipedia:
-- iOS 15 was released on September 20, 2021.
-- Ted Lasso premiered on August 14, 2020.
-- Apple TV (the media player) was released for mobile devices in the US on December 12, 2016, with iOS 10.2. For macOS is was part of macOS Catalina - or getting away from the stupid names - version 15 on October 7, 2019. So if you "around macOS 15 or so" I agree. That's not what you said. Where I think I do not agree with you (but am not sure) is what came before Apple TV (media app) - it replaced iTunes. While bloated and in need of deprecated, I tend to miss that fat little app.
Not sure which is worse... naming every single macOS major release by name (be it animal or place in California) or naming three completely different things (hardware, subscription content, media player) the same thing. Maybe I'll come to an opinion on this next cycle in 2027? Peace!
