But what exactly is a Mavericks? Where is Sonoma? And how many Mac users could point to where Ventura or Tahoe on a map?
I decided to trace the history and real-world locations behind every California-inspired macOS release and the wallpapers used to market the them to the world. Enjoy.

Still in love with that original yosemite wallpaper. It just makes every mac "feel" like a real mac for me. I think its still not beaten even to this day by any subsequent wallpaper.
Quick question about Mavericks, Sonoma, and well, every single animal (many not native to California in any way)... what VERSION of macOS (including OS X) was it?
Glad to see that last year's OS versions finally improved to *almost* reflect the year it was released. (At least Apple looks to be following car makers, who for decades have their model numbers reflect the year before release. You know, back in the day their Marketing departments would name, say a 1996 Dodge Ram based on a vehicle released in September 1995.)
I identify what version of any Apple OS by its version, not animal (even vegatble, mineral) or California name. Before September 2025 that required either a handy checklist or more likely Systems Settings.
@Joseph, I realize that for you a "real mac" isn't one without either the name or wallpaper. No problem. But for me a real Macintosh computer used to be spells MAC (eventually sometimes Mac) and went primarily by the OS version number running on it.It's sad (for me) that the year (season?) Apple decided to unify the OS versions across all their devices they also decided to turn macOS 26 (with yet another beta for 26.6 out yesterday) into a *very* unlike "feel" with their UI at the same time.
@Dave, I don't remember Apple Macintosh computer ever being spelled as MAC (all capitals). That seems to always be reserved for Media Access Control (MAC) address.
