Turn Off Repeating Text Message Alerts
The default iOS setting for iPhones is for message alerts to chime with the text tone twice, in a two minute interval. While the repeat text message alert sounds, notifications, and vibrations on the iPhone can be helpful for some people, those of us who are basically glued to our phones tend to experience quite the opposite and end up finding the repetitive alerts a nuisance, since it can seem like you’re being inundated with texts when you’re not.
Multiple chimes/buzzes for iMessage have been annoying me for years. I thought this was a bug, but it turns out that the notification settings for Messages are different from the settings for other apps.

This puzzled me when I first got an iPhone; why was it that the most useless and least pressing of all notifications (in my life) got the ability (and were set by default) to repeat, whereas things like reminders, meeting notifications from Calendar, and missed calls cannot be made to repeat? I missed enough reminder notifications that I ended up filing a Radar.
At the time I had turned off repeating alerts for Messages, but eventually I was not hearing the initial notification enough times that I turned repeating back on, deciding that being annoyed by a second sound if I'd forgotten to clear the initial notification was better than not noticing at all that a message came in.
