Anthropic S-1

Carly Page (SEC, Hacker News):

Anthropic has filed for an IPO that could rank among Wall Street’s biggest ever, revealing an $80.7 billion half-year loss, a startlingly complex governance structure, and warnings that its AI models could blackmail humans, resist shutdown, or create “existential risks” to society.

The Claude maker reported $16.3 billion in revenue for the first six months of 2026, up from $1.2 billion a year earlier. It also posted a whopping $80.7 billion net loss, although $72.4 billion of that was an accounting adjustment tied to the company’s soaring valuation, not money it actually spent.

Anthropic’s operating loss was considerably smaller at $693 million, down from $2.1 billion a year earlier. By its own adjusted accounting, the company made a $1.6 billion operating profit in the first half of 2026, for a margin of around 10 percent.

The seven co-founders will retain 50.1 percent of the voting power on shareholder matters, while a separate Long-Term Benefit Trust will get to appoint a majority of the board. In other words, Wall Street is being invited to bankroll Anthropic’s AI ambitions, but not necessarily to call the shots.

Brandon Vigliarolo:

Anthropic is going to need to do a lot to make its massive IPO more than just a flash in the pan[…] For one, the company has nearly a trillion dollars in compute commitments to pay for, which is going to mean it’ll be burning through more cash than a datacenter gas turbine turned up to 11. In addition to its massive spending for the foreseeable future, there’s also the fact that much of its computing power relies on customers who are also competitors.

Ashley Capoot (Hacker News):

Anthropic reported updated financials as part of an amended Form S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, giving investors a more comprehensive look into the state of its business.

The artificial intelligence company said it generated $33.24 billion in revenue for the nine months ended Sept. 30, up roughly 1,200% from the same period last year. It reported a $104 billion net loss during the period, though most of that was due to the change in fair value of convertible notes and derivative liabilities. Anthropic had a loss of $25.1 billion over the same stretch in 2025.

During its third quarter, Anthropic generated roughly $17 billion in revenue, up about 1,127% from the same period last year. Revenue growth slowed on a quarter-to-quarter basis, however. Third-quarter revenue increased around 47%, a steep drop from 144% growth in Q2 and 132% in Q1.

The company reported a net loss of $23.29 billion during its third quarter.
