iPhone Duo and Safari
A year ago I wrote that Safari 26 and Liquid Glass have little respect for web sites and unfortunately this hasn’t changed.

It’s unclear to me why Apple is not opting to treat the iPhone Duo toolbar as a safe area. I have not come across anything discussing their reasons nor educating web developers on the best way to design for this device.

Apple has decided to examine my web page and pick out a color to use for their toolbar. The process they use to determine this color is complex and not documented.

Safari on Duo seems absolutely stupid. Why isn’t it taking the entire width, with the same layout as normal phone, and the camera going into a top safe area? Like the Calculator app. Just makes no sense to put 2-4 buttons in a vertical bar that sits empty otherwise.
Even if they expose safe area APIs for websites, it's still wasted space. Background might stretch under the vertical bar, but websites still can’t put foreground elements there. And for what? What amazing UX problem does the vertical bar in Safari solve? It’s at most 4 buttons.
Smells like some designer deciding "consistency" is more important than function.
