Parachute Backup Acquired

Florian Albrecht (Reddit, Mac Power Users):

The team of Leitmotif is pleased to announce that, as of March 25, 2026, Parachute Backup is part of Leitmotif GmbH. Offloader and Outpost Launcher remain with Eric Mann. Parachute Backup 1.5.0 is the first version released by Leitmotif GmbH. Parachute Backup remains a one-time purchase, and its privacy-first approach remains unchanged.

Acquisitions make me reflexively wince but this company seems (at least from this distance) like a good steward for the software it acquires. And after reading Nick Heer's recent iCloud Photos post, this might be a good purchase, especially at this price.

Dang it! Just when I thought I found a good solution for photo backup. I’m already paying for too many software subscriptions, if this goes subscription, I’m out.

Now I’m considering how painful it would be to write an open source utility for this. I don’t need it to be pretty, I just need it to work reliably and run up warning flags if something breaks. I wish more of our “little utilities” that help make Mac great were open source. Sure, that would have reduced the compensation for the devs, but we wouldn’t have rug pulls all the time.

I need to look into getting a Tux tattoo at this point.

Sad news. The main feature that Leitmotif added to Kaleidoscope is subscription (with unfair model where I can't use app even when I've payed for it). Pretty sure this will happen to Parachute.

@rusavv I get not liking subscriptions, but they did add tons of features to Kaleidoscope.

Congrats to Eric. I prefer Parachute Backup to CCC Mobile.

Unfortunately with the liquid glass update, you can no longer use iCloud as a backup destination.

I have ADP enabled, so I was hoping to automate the backup various iPhone only folders to iCloud.

Parachute wasn’t perfect for this since every folder other than Craft’s was labeled as “Documents”, but it was better than nothing.

Is an interesting project that one can configure the to do back ups of the entire photos library.

@Michael Tsai I think this must be on user if he wants to pay for the new update and its features. Sketch, Coda can be used forever with the version I can get during the year I've paid for. Yes this means developer needs to add some really cool features every year but this is fair. Why I can't use Kaleidoscope for 3rd year if I've already paid 2 years before?

@rusavv There are certainly pros and cons to the different pricing models for both users and developers. That’s why I said that I get not liking subscriptions. But to say this is the “main” feature added to Kaleidoscope is ludicrous. This is one of the rare apps that switched to subscriptions and actually did follow through with accelerating development. The Sketch model sounds good on paper, but I really dislike how they discourage you from opening files created by newer versions of the app even if they’re not using new features.
