iOS 13.1 Developer Beta 1 Is Already Out

John Gruber:

Basically, I think we need to get used to WWDC announcements being a roadmap for the next year of OS releases, not a list of what’s going to ship in the initial dot-zero release in the fall.

Yep. And Apple should, too. It’s much better to ship a solid base (which, alas, 13.0 doesn’t seem to be) and add features later when they’re ready.

Yeah, I think it’s perfectly fine to lay out a roadmap for features to come for the next twelve months (until the next WWDC), which is effectively what they’ve been doing for a few years now (with releases like 8.4).

But…

they don’t seem very honest (even to themselves) about it. They seemed to actually believe they could ship AirPlay 2 in 11.0, or HomeKit Automations in 13.0. It’s not a huge deal, but it might suggest an unhealthy internal “crunch” culture.
I’m not (mostly) a developer on Apple platforms myself, but it seems a bit pointless to get third parties to rush implementing new APIs between June and September if you don’t really know that they’ll actually ship at that point. So, again, communicate honestly.
