Skype Credit Is No Longer Available

Skype (via Hacker News):

Skype Credit is no longer available. For new purchases, check out the monthly subscriptions or make a free Skype call to anyone anytime.

This a shame, as I liked to keep Skype around as a backup way to make calls and for devices that don’t have cellular plans. I was happy to pre-pay and let them take a little of the balance now and then as I had to tickle the account to keep it active. But I’m not going to pay a monthly subscription just to have it immediately ready to make a call.

That's really sad!!! I sure don't want a subscription, but it was really convenient for my occasional phone calls abroad.
Not sure what other service I can use for that (and calling through my cellular plan is cost-prohibitive for these sorts of things).

Oh wow. Reading about Skype credit brought me back in time. My wife used to call her family in China using skype. I was even seriously contemplating buying a dedicated Skype telephone.

Now it's all WeChat obviously but I can't remember what came in between.

Those Skype phones though. Felt like the future.

It looks like they do not allow to get new Skype phone numbers anymore. And it's unclear how long the numbers that are already bought will work.

More economical pieces of software out there that Skype. Microsoft should have mage it like FaceTime.
