Dell’s Massive 49-Inch 5K Ultrawide Display

Juli Clover:

Dell recently unveiled the first 49-inch ultrawide 5K monitor with a 32:9 aspect ratio, the result of which is a wide, immersive display with an impressive resolution.

In our latest YouTube video, we were able to go hands-on with Dell’s U4919DW display, putting it through its paces to see if it’s worth the $1250 asking price.

It’s actually a shockingly low price considering what displays used to cost. And 49 inches sounds huge, but it’s like having a 27-inch display next to an iMac—I’m currently using a 30-inch. So something like this could be great with a laptop or Mac mini. (Although, one advantage of a dual-display setup is that you can put the Apple menu in the middle, and the cursor will snap to the corner.) Unfortunately, it’s not Retina.

It’s not really 5k. It’s ppi is a rather paltry ~108, especially when compared to the lg ultrafine 5k which hits ~218ppi. This seems to be two regular normal 2560x 1440 panels Frankensteined together, but I really don’t think it’s all that compelling when you could just buy two discrete panels for like 400~.

Also super weird the verge review doesn’t mention the complete bog standard ppi especially since the marketing name misleads by labelling it a 5k.

@9935C101Ab17A66 It literally is more than 5K pixels wide, so I don’t think the name is misleading.

@Michael
It’s interesting though, that retina grade displays seem to not have caught on in the rest of the industry. Best price/performance (or simply best performance) are NEC displays (I love my PA272W despite its name) but they don’t make a retina version either…

Is this what people imagine when they see the term "5K display"? I don't think so. Similarly, when somebody sells me a 4K display, I expect something at least in the ballpark of 3,840 by 2,160 pixels. Two 1080p panels don't make a 4K panel. So to me, calling this a 5K display seems pretty misleading.

It's kinda cool, no doubt, but it's only a 5K display in the most legalistic interpretation of the term.
