Delta’s IAP Scare Sheet

Riley Testut:

Delta’s latest update with our revised Patreon sign-up flow has been approved! We can now freely mention our Patreon without giving Apple 27% of donations 🎉

Of course Apple still requires we offer in-app purchases…so we shoved them away at the bottom of Delta’s settings under “Alternate Payment Methods” ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Riley Testut:

It’s not about fees at all, Patreon just gives us far more value than IAP as a 2-person startup (ability to issue refunds, offer support to customers, etc.)

Riley Testut (suggested by D. Griffin Jones):

Adding a new screen to Delta to inform users about the differences when using In-App Purchase instead of donating directly to our Patreon — what do y’all think?

Looks like this design isn’t quite ready to ship. It needs to be clearer to the user just how dangerous IAP is. They should add a red caution symbol or something.

The strange thing, if you stop to think about it, is that Riley and Patreon have a much stronger case to actually warn against Apple. Customer friendly support is much harder to conduct through the IAP system, and Apple has shown that it either does not have a lucid understanding of the features offered by other payment providers, or is completely disinterested in representing their strengths and weaknesses accurately. To some degree picking and choosing is marketing, but Apple now has a recorded history of actual perjury. IAP has been a strong-armer's bargain from day 1.

Apple has destroyed Jobs’ magical Reality Distortion Field®.

Apple is still kicking and screaming. They are still awaiting official results on their request for a temporary stay of the order, as well as an appeal, correct?

What if they did win both? And then kicked Fortnite back off the app store (I presume that post is coming.) Can we imagine Apple doing that, even with the full legal right? It seems court of public opinion has come down on the side of these changes being like water in the desert. Would Apple really be that callous and tone-deaf?

Ach still wish I could edit posts, I'll wait longer before hitting submit. Just to be clear, my mention of Fortnite is a sidenote really. The want to roll back this Patreon support and everything else that everyone has been clamoring for, and they are still trying to do the bare minimum.

This is a great start. My suggestions to reach Apple's level of Security Theater:

"Continue" should be renamed "Continue (Be Careful)". It should be red to indicate it's a destructive action.

If the user continues, pop up a second sheet, "Are you really sure you want to trust Apple, Inc.?". The goal is to mimic the double-Vista user experience Apple has driven apps to adopt (where it encourages devs to ask the user in a popup before presenting the official permissions popup, since the official popup can't be shown again once the user chooses).

Incorporate a red SF Symbol like exclamationmark.octagon.fill or hand.raised.app.fill to hint the user should stop.

Subtly mess up the font whenever "Apple Inc." is used. Make it a little lighter and squeeze in the text (tighter kerning) to lower the legibility. Rewrite your text so on most devices it wraps on "Apple Inc." but apply hyphenation so it appears as "Apple-Inc.". Make users question if it really is Apple.
