Magic Mouse Rumors

Mike Wuerthele:

In a report on Sunday morning by Bloomberg, Apple is said to be prototyping new versions of the Magic Mouse internally. On the top of the list of changes, is a relocation of the charging port, and perhaps new ergonomics, but that point isn’t clear.

It’s not clear when a new design will arrive. The report says to not expect anything for at least a year, and maybe not for 18 months.

Joe Rossignol (tweet):

While no specific design details about the next Magic Mouse were shared, perhaps Apple will take some inspiration from popular alternatives for the Mac, like Logitech’s excellent MX Master 3S. That mouse features an ergonomic design with a thumb rest, a front-facing USB-C charging port, precision tracking, two scroll wheels, and more.

The overall look of the Magic Mouse has not changed much since 2009, so a redesign has been a long time coming. Notable changes over the years include the mouse switching from AA batteries to a built-in rechargeable battery in 2015, new color-matching options with the iMac in 2021, and the switch from Lightning to USB-C this year. Overall, the Magic Mouse has not received much attention from Apple over the past decade.

Christian Selig:

I really wish Apple would license out the cool Magic Mouse “gesture surface” tech to third-party mouse companies like Logitech. Apple’s never going to make a mouse as ergonomic as like, an MX Vertical, which is fine, but I really want that smooth scrolling!

Update (2025-01-02): Hartley Charlton:

Expanding on a recent report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Korean Apple news aggregator known as “yeux1122” says that Apple’s next-generation Magic Mouse will feature a new, more ergonomic design that addresses long-standing complaints, including the location of the charging port.

[…]

Apple has apparently designed a prototype of the new mouse that incorporates a mixture of touch, voice controls, and hand gestures, making it more suitable for today’s computing demands. It reportedly plans to release the new Magic Mouse alongside the OLED, “M6” MacBook Pro in 2026.

Juli Clover:

An upcoming version of the Magic Mouse with voice control for AI would “make sense,” Bloomberg’s Mark Gurmansaid today, though he claimed that he has heard no rumors about the feature so far.

If I was going to place a bet, it's that Apple won't make a mouse that is ergonomically specific to left, or right-handedness. It would be unlike Apple to make two SKUs.

I'd expect something more like the Steelseries Sensei Ten, but with a front-connecting type-c charge port.

More likely it'll be an iCloud-connected mouse, that carries its settings onboard, and then whenever you sit at any Mac, even a shared mac, it temporarily pushes your mouse settings to the machine... probably also has touchID built in so it can only be used by its registered owner.

Costs about as much as a high end gaming mouse.

This is presumably because Apple’s UX team includes left-handed and maybe even ambidextrous people, who have a broader idea of what it means to be “ergonomic”.

@Someone that mouse sounds amazing but I'm not getting my hopes that high.

My bet is that they will remove the charging port completely and make it wireless only, and that will be the big innovation.

I don't think they will ever put the port on the front. By now it's as much a statement of defiance as anything. Apple refuses to admit that there was ever anything wrong with the port on the bottom. They will sidestep the issue entirely by removing the port. That sounds a lot more like the Apple of the last decade.

I personally think Apple are incapable of making a decent mouse. I highly doubt their next one will be better than any of their previous efforts.

Minimum effort like putting a front facing charging port on a slightly elevated magic mouse with perhaps a touch ID thing where a scroll wheel should be.

"I personally think Apple are incapable of making a decent mouse"

Dunno, the ADB Mouse II was pretty nice.
