Google Docs Can Import and Export Markdown
Google (via Hacker News):
In 2022, we introduced expanded support for composing with Markdown in Google Docs on web. Today, we’re introducing highly-requested features that enhance Docs’ interoperability with other Markdown supporting tools. These include the ability to:
- Convert Markdown to Docs content on paste
- Copy Docs content as Markdown
- Export a Doc as Markdown (from File > Download)
- Import Markdown as a Doc (from File > Open or “Open with Google Docs” from Drive)
This sounds great, reminiscent of OmniFocus’s support for TaskPaper. You can collaborate on a big document in Google Docs and then convert it to a more useful format. And it’s also great to be able to copy and paste little snippets, as Markdown has become kind of an interchange micro format for formatted text.

I still only have "Automatically detect Markdown" in the Tools>Preferences section. I read elsewhere that others have a "Enable Markdown within Docs" option which is what I need. The ability to copy/paste to/from Docs/Markdown would be huge time saver for me. Right now I deal with that via simple macOS Shortcuts in the menubar. Is it possible to enable this without having the doc also automatically rewrite _this_ as italics? Guess I have to wait and see.
I'm also still waiting for this update to be rolled out to me. According to the thread in HN, it's being rolled out incrementally.
I wonder if this was inspired by Stashpad Docs, a markdown focused Google Docs competitor.
But if that were the case, their emails would end up in spam on Gmail. I noticed that a lot of emails from competitors end up in spam. Replit used to before the partnership for Ghostwriter. Universe for iOS ends up in spam. I can’t think of others off the top of my head.
