Most smartphone cameras have wide-angle lenses, says The Verge’s creative director James Bareham, and close-ups with wide-angle lenses cause distortion that makes objects closer to the camera — like, say, a nose — look larger. “It’s kind of one of the basics of photography: don’t shoot portraits on a wide-angle lens because you will look terrible,” Bareham says.

That's what selfie sticks are for - keep the camera at a good distance to avoid distortion! I want the next iPhone to have a built-in stick for this purpose, or maybe it could just fly / hover at the appropriate distance...
This is saddening. Just outright disheartening. People need to simply be themselves. Do you. Have fun. Stop sweating this false image of perfection.
I mean, in all honesty, I'm a pretty vain guy, but photos still make me nervous if I take them too seriously. I don't warm up to the camera like some people. Yet, even I do alright with the whole self photo snap. The secret to selfies is taking a bunch of quick snaps, different angles, send the best. Don't stress out. Again, be you. It's supposed to be a fun chance to share a quick, "Hey guys, it's me!" or maybe even "Hey, it's me and the kids/dog/cat/abominable snow man." Geeze.
