Planet of the Apps

Husain Sumra:

Apple wasn’t the first choice for the show, according to Silverman. The project was initially shopped around to the big networks. The show drew major interest, but Will.I.Am brought up the show to Jimmy Iovine while at a meeting with Apple in Los Angeles. Apple was interested, and Silverman and the rest of the producers slowed down the process with the networks to give Apple a chance at securing it for Apple Music.

[…]

Cue later emphasized that Apple doesn’t just want to buy shows, denying that Apple was ever interested in purchasing The Grand Tour. Instead, Apple only wants to make shows that are unique and “create culture.”

The trailer is here. Most of the reactions I’ve seen have been negative:

True. But the ending, where Taylor kneels on the beach, looking at the submerged ruins of Snow Leopard, and shouts: "You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!" is a pretty awesome moment.

You have to admit that for years now, Apple users worldwide have been clamoring as one for more Will.i.am and less investment in scripting support.

Addendum: This may be another data point for my theory that Eddy Cue is a problem for Apple. He may be good at something, but I'm not sure it's what he's doing now.

A wise man once said "they have absolutely no taste". Never thought it would apply to his own company too, as it does in this case.

Have you actually looked outside your circle of iOS bloggers & commentators? Other people seem interested / intrigued by the prospect.

@Ashley Please feel free to post links.

One last thought: It seems to me the time for this show was back in 2009-2010, not now when there's already a zillion apps available but forgotten and unloved.

This show is perfect. It perfectly encapsulates the new Apple.
