How to Keep App Store From Updating Old Versions of Xcode

Brian Webster:

If Spotlight can find an old version of Xcode, the App Store will happily update it. So, the trick you can use to prevent the App Store from doing so is to hide your old version(s) of Xcode from Spotlight.

I accidentally updated Xcode on an external drive running an older OS (for troubleshooting purposes). Though Apple provides developers with a way to install older apps on the Mac App Store, they don't seem to have enabled that for Xcode.

The solution was to go to developer.apple.com and dig through the downloads section for the older version of Xcode. It's a regular package installer, though I'm not sure if the Mac App Store will attempt to update it again in the same scenario.
