{"id":7948,"date":"2013-09-24T10:48:43","date_gmt":"2013-09-24T15:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/?p=7948"},"modified":"2014-07-31T15:57:29","modified_gmt":"2014-07-31T19:57:29","slug":"iphone-scanningocr-apps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/24\/iphone-scanningocr-apps\/","title":{"rendered":"iPhone Scanning\/OCR Apps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently discovered two iPhone apps that can &ldquo;scan&rdquo; documents using the camera, perform OCR, and then e-mail the text:<\/p>\r\n<ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smilesoftware.com\/PDFpen\/Scan\/index.html\">PDFpen Scan+<\/a> is from Smile and uses the <a href=\"http:\/\/code.google.com\/p\/tesseract-ocr\/\">Tesseract OCR engine<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abbyy.com\/textgrabber\/\">TextGrabber<\/a> is from ABBYY and uses their own OCR engine.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>I find the <a href=\"http:\/\/smilesoftware.com\/PDFpen\/index.html\">Mac version of PDFpen<\/a> to be much nicer than <a href=\"http:\/\/finereader.abbyy.com\/finereader_for_mac\/\">ABBYY FineReader<\/a>, although the OCR is somewhat less accurate for documents from my ScanSnap. I often invoke PDFpen&rsquo;s OCR <a href=\"http:\/\/c-command.com\/scripts\/eaglefiler\/ocr-with-pdfpen\">via AppleScript<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>On iOS, I found TextGrabber&rsquo;s interface to be smoother and faster.
