{"id":6345,"date":"2012-10-08T15:24:57","date_gmt":"2012-10-08T20:24:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/?p=6345"},"modified":"2016-06-02T11:55:10","modified_gmt":"2016-06-02T15:55:10","slug":"overpowered-usb-devices-underpowered-hubs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/08\/overpowered-usb-devices-underpowered-hubs\/","title":{"rendered":"Overpowered USB Devices, Underpowered Hubs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An annoying aspect of the current Mac hardware experience, with FireWire on the way out, is that external storage no longer &ldquo;just works.&rdquo; Nearly every USB hard drive I&rsquo;ve used&mdash;across a variety of Macs, enclosures, hubs, UPSes, and buildings&mdash;has either exhibited power problems or random disconnects. Moreover, I&rsquo;m sure that these power issues are widespread, but they are rarely discussed in product reviews and spec sheets.<\/p>\r\n<p>Particularly problematic are the bus-powered 2.5-inch drives. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0047ZH0B6\/?tag=michaeltsai-20\">USB 2.0 Toshiba Canvio<\/a> is the best that I&rsquo;ve used. As far as I know, it operates correctly with the specified amount of USB current. But try connecting more than a couple to a USB hub, even the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newertech.com\/products\/7_port_powered_usb2_hub.php\">NewerTech one<\/a> that boasts of delivering &ldquo;all the power needed for all seven ports,&rdquo; and watch it disconnect or fail to mount. The other hubs that I&rsquo;ve tried, even from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kensington.com\/kensington\/en\/no\/p\/611\/1500100\/dome-7-port-usb-hub.aspx\">reputable companies<\/a>, are worse.<\/p>\r\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/us.toshiba.com\/computers\/storage\/portable\/canvio-3\/\">USB 3.0 Toshiba Canvio<\/a> is even more problematic. It draws more power than is allowed by the USB spec, so that it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phonenews.com\/toshiba-acknowledges-macbook-woes-canvio-usb-3-0-hard-drives-18699\/\">doesn&rsquo;t work at all<\/a> with newer MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros that supply only the specified power to the USB ports, although it can work <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phonenews.com\/toshiba-completes-investigation-offers-mac-owners-canvio-drive-replacements-20062\/\">via a powered hub<\/a>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An annoying aspect of the current Mac hardware experience, with FireWire on the way out, is that external storage no longer &ldquo;just works.&rdquo; Nearly every USB hard drive I&rsquo;ve used&mdash;across a variety of Macs, enclosures, hubs, UPSes, and buildings&mdash;has either exhibited power problems or random disconnects.
