The 12MP TrueDepth camera in front likewise has the same specs as last year, with the same addition of &ldquo;next-generation portraits.&rdquo; Apple attributes this ability to improvements in its image pipeline.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tidbits.com\/2026\/03\/02\/new-iphone-17e-adds-magsafe-to-apples-budget-iphone\/\">Adam Engst<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/tidbits.com\/2026\/03\/02\/new-iphone-17e-adds-magsafe-to-apples-budget-iphone\/\">\n<p>However, for most people who pay attention to the details, I think the $799 iPhone 17 remains a better deal. For $200 more, you get a larger, brighter screen (6.3 versus 6.1 inches), Camera Control for the fastest access to the camera, an Ultra Wide camera for macro and wide-angle photos, a higher resolution 18-megapixel Center Stage front camera with support for dual capture, better battery life, Always-On display with ProMotion technology for smoother scrolling, Dynamic Island, and more.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>However, the 17e does have the Action button, which I think is better for triggering the camera, anyway.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2026\/03\/apples-new-iphone-17e-has-an-a19-chip-magsafe-and-256gb-of-storage-for-599\/\">Andrew Cunningham<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2026\/03\/apples-new-iphone-17e-has-an-a19-chip-magsafe-and-256gb-of-storage-for-599\/\">\n<p>The new iPhone includes an Apple A19 chip similar to the one in the more-expensive iPhone 17&mdash;both phones have six CPU cores, but the 17e only gets four GPU cores instead of five.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/birchtree.me\/blog\/the-iphone-17e\/\">Matt Birchler<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/birchtree.me\/blog\/the-iphone-17e\/\">\n<p>MagSafe has been added, although it does have slower charging speeds than the other iPhones in the lineup (but it does equal the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro lineup, so not too far behind).<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Based on Apple&rsquo;s compare page, it looks like this might be the exact camera that&rsquo;s in the iPhone Air.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sfba.social\/@steven_aquino\/116160538468662822\">Steven Aquino<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/sfba.social\/@steven_aquino\/116160538468662822\">\n<p>I gotta say, if the iPhone 17e had a Dynamic Island, I might&rsquo;ve given it serious consideration as my everyday phone. They started with <em>this,<\/em> and then worked their way down to <em>there.<\/em><\/p><p>It doesn&rsquo;t strike me as a device that was designed from the ground up to hit a maximum price point. In my eye, that&rsquo;s the more interesting challenge, and it creates more interesting products at this price level. It&rsquo;s the difference between designing a less-interesting version of an expensive thing, and designing a brand-new thing that&rsquo;s truly exciting&#8230;where the lower price is among the least-interesting things about it.<\/p><p>The price is the other thing that&rsquo;s nagging at me right now. Was $599 the best they could do? Is $599 even a worthy goal?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p id=\"iphone-17e-update-2026-03-20\">Update (<a href=\"#iphone-17e-update-2026-03-20\">2026-03-20<\/a>): <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2026\/03\/10\/apple-iphone-17e-macbook-neo-benchmarks\/\">Juli Clover<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2026\/03\/10\/apple-iphone-17e-macbook-neo-benchmarks\/\">\n<p>The  iPhone 17e  earned a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2026\/03\/06\/iphone-17e-benchmarks\/\">multi-core score of 9,241<\/a> on early Geekbench benchmarks, while the  MacBook Neo  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2026\/03\/05\/macbook-neo-first-benchmarks\/\">earned a multi-core score of 8,668<\/a>. Single-core chip results also favored the  iPhone 17e , which earned a score of 3,607, while the Neo had a single-core score of 3,461.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/2026\/03\/the_iphone_17e\">John Gruber<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/2026\/03\/the_iphone_17e\">\n<p>The 17e camera system remains limited to Apple&rsquo;s original <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/guide\/iphone\/use-photographic-styles-iph629d2cd37\/ios\">Photographic Styles<\/a>; all the other iPhones in the new A19 generation&#x2009;&mdash;&#x2009;the 17, 17 Pro, and Air&#x2009;&mdash;&#x2009;offer the much improved &ldquo;latest-generation&rdquo; Photographic Styles. In practice, this means the system Camera app on the 17e only offers these styles: Standard, Rich Contrast, Vibrant, Warm, and Cool. The second-generation Photographic Styles, which debuted last year on the iPhone 16 models, offer a much wider variety of styles and more fine-grained control, all of which processing is non-destructive.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Here&rsquo;s a link to Apple&rsquo;s ever-excellent Compare page, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/iphone\/compare\/?modelList=iphone-16e,iphone-17e,iphone-17\">with a comparison of the 16e vs. 17e vs. 17<\/a>. (For posterity, here&rsquo;s that Compare page <a href=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/misc\/2026\/03\/iPhone-16e-vs-iPhone-17e-vs-iPhone-17.pdf\">archived as a PDF<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>The iPhone 17 has the clever <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/guide\/iphone\/view-live-activities-in-the-dynamic-island-iph28f50d10d\/ios\">Dynamic Island<\/a>; the 17e has a dumb notch. The Dynamic Island is nice to have, but despite having one on my personal phone for 3.5 years (it debuted with the 14 Pro in 2022), I can&rsquo;t say I&rsquo;ve particularly missed it during the better part of a week that I&rsquo;ve been using the 17e as my primary phone. I actually had to double check that the 17e doesn&rsquo;t have it while first writing this paragraph, because, over my first few days of testing, I just hadn&rsquo;t noticed. But then I went out and ran an errand requiring an Uber ride, while listening to a podcast, and I noticed the lack of a Dynamic Island&#x2009;&mdash;&#x2009;no live status update for the hailed Uber, and no quick-tap button for jumping back into <a href=\"https:\/\/overcast.fm\/\">Overcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Here&rsquo;s a table with pricing for the iPhone models Apple currently sells[&#8230;] Frankly, I&rsquo;m not sure who the year-old iPhone 16 is for today, especially considering that Apple is now only offering it with 128 GB of storage.
