The updates include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>iOS 18.7.4 and iPadOS 18.7.4<\/li>\n<li>iOS 16.7.13 and iPadOS 16.7.13<\/li>\n<li>iOS 15.8.6 and iPadOS 15.8.6<\/li>\n<li>iOS 12.5.8<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Usually, when Apple updates much older operating systems, it&rsquo;s because of a particularly problematic security vulnerability, though even then, the company seldom goes back more than two releases. However, something else is going on this time, as indicated by the security notes, which state that none of the releases have any published CVE entries.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Apple seems to be doubling down on encouraging users to update to iOS 26. These bug fix updates for iOS 18 and earlier are only available for users with older iPhones. Currently restoring my settings and content from an iCloud backup. I do not recommend this update to Apple users.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is the only such report I&rsquo;ve seen so far.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2026\/01\/apple-patches-ancient-ios-versions-to-keep-imessage-facetime-other-services-working\/\">Andrew Cunningham<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2026\/01\/apple-patches-ancient-ios-versions-to-keep-imessage-facetime-other-services-working\/\">\n<p>These updates don&rsquo;t patch security flaws or add new features. According to Apple&rsquo;s release notes for the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/118387\">iOS 12<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/108051\">iOS 15 updates<\/a>, all they do is update a security certificate to ensure that iMessage, FaceTime, and Apple account sign-in will continue working past January 2027, when the operating systems&rsquo; original certificate would have expired.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/layer8.space\/@teilweise\/115972049374364021\">Der Teilweise<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/layer8.space\/@teilweise\/115972049374364021\">\n<p>Does Apple withholding this update to devices that are supported by iOS 26 mean that iMessage and Facetime will break in January 2027 on those iPhones unless you upgrade to iOS 26?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p id=\"ios-26-2-1-update-2026-02-04\">Update (<a href=\"#ios-26-2-1-update-2026-02-04\">2026-02-04<\/a>): <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macworld.com\/article\/3051868\/iphone-users-say-ios-26-2-1-causes-crashes-and-connectivity-issues.html\">David Price<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.macworld.com\/article\/3051868\/iphone-users-say-ios-26-2-1-causes-crashes-and-connectivity-issues.html\"><p>iPhone owners on multiple forums are reporting crashes, freezes and other problems with the latest point update, iOS 26.2.1.<\/p><p>One <a href=\"https:\/\/discussions.apple.com\/thread\/256233746\">thread<\/a> on the Apple Community forum is called &ldquo;iOS 26.2.1 has rendered my phone unusable&rdquo; and complains that nearly every app on the user&rsquo;s iPhone has started to crash or freeze since installing the update. <\/p><p>[&#8230;]<\/p><p>Elsewhere, you can read more complaints on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ios\/comments\/1qubskt\/ios_2621_feels_like_an_user_experiment\/\">Reddit thread<\/a> called &ldquo;iOS 26.2.1 feels like an user experiment&rdquo; which has plenty of comments.<\/p><p>[&#8230;]<\/p><p>But neither are we talking about just one or two cases. There&rsquo;s yet <a href=\"https:\/\/discussions.apple.com\/thread\/256232730?sortBy=rank\">another thread<\/a> on Apple Community called &ldquo;Connectivity failure after iOS 26.2.1 update&rdquo; that complains that the user&rsquo;s iPhone can no longer connect to the phone provider&rsquo;s network. And even the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/apple\/comments\/1qvflcg\/ios_2621_problems_reported_by_iphone_users_after\/\">thread<\/a> discussing MacObserver&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macobserver.com\/news\/ios-26-2-1-problems-reported-by-iphone-users-after-the-update\/\">original news story<\/a> features a lot more commenters reporting the same issues.<\/p><\/blockquote>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Juli Clover (release notes, no security, no enterprise, no developer): iOS 26.2.1 adds support for the next-generation AirTag that Apple introduced today.
