Either way, I built a tiny Mac app last night that draws a border around the active window. I named it &ldquo;Alan&rdquo;.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pxlnv.com\/linklog\/alan-app\/\">Nick Heer<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/pxlnv.com\/linklog\/alan-app\/\">\n<p>I wish it did not feel understandable for there to be an app that draws a big border around the currently active window. That should be something made sufficiently obvious by the system.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Back in the System 7 days, Apple itself was working on a new design featuring thicker window borders. Users liked the forthcoming design so much that they installed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macintoshrepository.org\/538-aaron-1-x\">Aaron<\/a> system extension to get it early. System 8 was codenamed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copland_(operating_system)\">Copland<\/a>, after composer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aaron_Copland\">Aaron Copland<\/a>. &ldquo;Alan&rdquo; is presumably a reference to <a href=\"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2025\/12\/03\/alan-dye-leaving-apple-for-meta\/\">departing<\/a> Apple design VP Alan Dye.<\/p>\n\n<p>Previously:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2025\/10\/16\/shipping-liquid-glass\/\">Shipping Liquid Glass<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2025\/09\/15\/macos-tahoe-26\/\">macOS Tahoe 26<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p id=\"alan-and-aaron-update-2025-12-09\">Update (<a href=\"#alan-and-aaron-update-2025-12-09\">2025-12-09<\/a>): <a href=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/linked\/2025\/12\/03\/alan-app\">John Gruber<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/mastodon.social\/@daringfireball\/115657959245633027\">Mastodon<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/linked\/2025\/12\/03\/alan-app\">\n<p>It&rsquo;s worth following Hall&rsquo;s &ldquo;the contrast between windows&rdquo; link, which points to <a href=\"https:\/\/tyler.io\/2020\/09\/surtainly-not\/#active-window\">his own post from five years ago<\/a> lamenting the decline in contrast between active and inactive windows in MacOS.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Jobs even <a href=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/misc\/2025\/12\/leopard-active-window.jpeg\">prepared a slide<\/a>, highlighting &ldquo;Prominent active window&rdquo; as a noteworthy new feature. In 2007, the increase of visual prominence for the active window, going from 10.4 Tiger to 10.5 Leopard, drew applause from the audience.
