{"id":47544,"date":"2025-04-29T13:57:44","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T17:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/?p=47544"},"modified":"2025-05-05T09:40:55","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T13:40:55","slug":"backblaze-business-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2025\/04\/29\/backblaze-business-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Backblaze Business Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.morpheus-research.com\/backblaze\/\">Morpheus Research<\/a> (via <a href=\"https:\/\/indieweb.social\/@jbz\/114409613467368902\">Juan B&aacute;ez<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=43802675\">Hacker News<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.morpheus-research.com\/backblaze\/\"><p>Since its November 2021 IPO, Backblaze has reported losses every quarter, its outstanding share count has grown by 80%, and its share price has declined by 71%.<\/p><p>In October 2024, two former senior employees filed suit against Backblaze, alleging accounting fraud, inflated projections, and whistleblower retaliation.<\/p><p>[&#8230;]<\/p><p>4 months into selling his shares, Backblaze co-founder &amp; CTO Brian Wilson wrote in an internal email, &ldquo;if BLZE goes straight down to zero, each day I sold was beyond totally justified and I won&rsquo;t regret it&rdquo; shortly before resigning amidst continued share sales, according to Backblaze&rsquo;s former VP of Investor Relations.<\/p><p>[&#8230;]<\/p><p>After the exit of CFO Frank Patchel, in August 2024, one might have expected Backblaze to bring in a CFO with a track-record of turning around poorly performing companies. Instead, Backblaze&rsquo;s new CFO, Marc Suidan, joined from Beachbody (NYSE: BODI), a multi-level marketing company, where he was CFO from May 2022 to August 2024. During his tenure, BeachBody missed earnings estimates in 6 out of 9 quarters and the stock fell 91%.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/news\/stock-market-news\/backblaze-stock-plunges-amid-morpheus-research-report-93CH-4002444\">Investing.com<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/news\/stock-market-news\/backblaze-stock-plunges-amid-morpheus-research-report-93CH-4002444\"><p>Governance issues have arisen, with the company ceasing to answer retail investor questions after Q2 2024 and failing to disclose whistleblower lawsuits in its 10-K filings. The reliability of Backblaze&rsquo;s financial metrics has been called into question, particularly after redefining its &ldquo;Adjusted Free Cash Flow&rdquo; metric.<\/p><p>On the market front, Backblaze&rsquo;s positioning as an &ldquo;AI storage&rdquo; company has been criticized by former executives, including the former CTO, as misleading.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2025\/04\/backblaze-responds-to-claims-of-sham-accounting-customer-backups-at-risk\/\">Scharon Harding<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=43827236\">Hacker News<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2025\/04\/backblaze-responds-to-claims-of-sham-accounting-customer-backups-at-risk\/\">\n<p>Backblaze is dismissing allegations from a short seller that it engaged in &ldquo;sham accounting&rdquo; that could put the cloud storage and backup solution provider and its customers&rsquo; backups in jeopardy.<\/p>\n<p>On April 24, Morpheus Research posted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.morpheus-research.com\/backblaze\/\">lengthy report<\/a> accusing the San Mateo, California-based firm of practicing &ldquo;sham accounting and brazen insider dumping.&rdquo; The claims largely stem from a pair of lawsuits filed against Backblaze by former employees Huey Hall [<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.arstechnica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Hall-complaint.pdf\">PDF<\/a>] and James Kisner [<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.arstechnica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Hall-complaint.pdf\">PDF<\/a>] in October. Per LinkedIn profiles, Hall was Backblaze&rsquo;s head of finance from March 2020 to February 2024, and Kisner was Backblaze&rsquo;s VP of investor relations and financial planning from May 2021 to November 2023.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Even if the accounting is accurate, it doesn&rsquo;t seem prudent to rely on a company that is continually losing money and that offers unlimited plans for a low flat rate.<\/p>\n\n<p>I have continually heard of people&rsquo;s good experiences with Backblaze, but I could never get past various design issues and its practice of telling you that your files are backed up before they are committed and actually restorable. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arqbackup.com\">Arq<\/a> has worked well for me for many years.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pxlnv.com\/linklog\/morpheus-research-backblaze\/\">Nick Heer<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/pxlnv.com\/linklog\/morpheus-research-backblaze\/\">\n<p>I am worried about this because Backblaze is part of my backup strategy. If it reduces its focus on backups in favour of an enterprise clientele it cannot win, it seems likely both are at risk &mdash; assuming Morpheus Research&rsquo;s findings are in any way accurate.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>I have many terabytes backed-up with Backblaze. I entrust it with my precious photos and music collection &mdash; the latter was the motivation for my subscription in the first place. But I should have always been more cautious given the company&rsquo;s flat-rate promise. I simply assumed it would eventually become a tiered system. Now, I feel like I have reason to worry a little more.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/talk.macpowerusers.com\/t\/is-backblaze-as-a-business-in-trouble\/27861\/18\">cornchip<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/talk.macpowerusers.com\/t\/is-backblaze-as-a-business-in-trouble\/27861\/18\">\n<p>Backblaze doesn&rsquo;t break out profitability by product division anymore, but when they did, computer backups were profitable. B2 wasn&rsquo;t. The cost of revenue largely comes from the B2 side because S3-compatible object storage is intensely competes on price\/gb whereas computer backup competes on perceived trust, UI, etc. They consolidate fixed operating costs now, but the R&amp;D is largely for B2, too.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>That&rsquo;s interesting, as I had assumed that the metered B2 was the part that was profitable. Since then, we have publicly filed two annual financial statements, which were fully audited and which are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/edgar\/browse\/?CIK=1462056&amp;owner=exclude\">available on the SEC EDGAR site<\/a>.<\/p><p>In an effort to enrich themselves, the short seller questioned the health of Backblaze.<\/p><p><strong>We have never been stronger.<\/strong> As reported in our last earnings call, we continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.backblaze.com\/news\/news-details\/2025\/Backblaze-Announces-Fourth-Quarter-and-Full-Year-2024-Financial-Results\/default.aspx\">demonstrate financial strength<\/a>. Our revenue is over $127 million per year and growing. Our balance sheet is strong with over $50 million in cash and short-term investments as of December 31, 2024.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, the linked financial results do confirm that the company lost $48.5 million in 2024 and $59.7 million in 2023. It also says that the number of Computer Backup customers has decreased.
