{"id":45076,"date":"2024-09-24T15:49:19","date_gmt":"2024-09-24T19:49:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/?p=45076"},"modified":"2024-09-25T15:19:09","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T19:19:09","slug":"halide-rejected-from-the-app-store","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2024\/09\/24\/halide-rejected-from-the-app-store\/","title":{"rendered":"Halide Rejected From the App Store"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mastodon.social\/@sandofsky\/113181384256449181\">Ben Sandofsky<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=41636038\">Hacker News<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/mastodon.social\/@sandofsky\/113181384256449181\"><p>The latest Halide update was rejected because, after seven years, a random reviewer decided our permission prompt wasn&rsquo;t descriptive enough.<\/p><p>I don&rsquo;t know how to explain why a camera app needs camera permissions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>If you <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=41636450\">think<\/a> the reviewer was correct because &ldquo;The camera will be used to take photographs&rdquo; is a circular description, note that:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><p>It took the better part of a decade for Apple to catch this.<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>ProCamera&rsquo;s description is &ldquo;Usage of the camera is needed to take photos and videos.&rdquo;<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>Final Cut Camera&rsquo;s description is &ldquo;Allow camera access to record video.&rdquo;<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2024\/09\/24\/halide-rejected-from-the-app-store-because-it-doesnt-explain-why-the-camera-takes-photos\/\">Ben Lovejoy<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2024\/09\/24\/halide-rejected-from-the-app-store-because-it-doesnt-explain-why-the-camera-takes-photos\/\">\n<p>Halide may have been featured during the iPhone 16 keynote, but it seems that wasn&rsquo;t enough to protect it from an over-zealous App Store reviewer.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Halide&rsquo;s Sebastiaan de Wish <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sdw\/status\/1838652427668722100?s=61\">says the company received a call<\/a> from Apple informing them that this was a mistake.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Do they do any postmortems for these erroneous rejections? Why isn&rsquo;t there some sort of warning to the reviewer: did you really mean to reject this app for metadata that was already accepted 100 times in a row and hasn&rsquo;t changed?<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mastodon.social\/@sandofsky\/113194000935911018\">Ben Sandofsky<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/mastodon.social\/@sandofsky\/113194000935911018\"><p>Apple followed up to let us know what happened.
