{"id":44804,"date":"2024-09-10T15:08:04","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T19:08:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/?p=44804"},"modified":"2024-09-10T15:10:17","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T19:10:17","slug":"apple-denies-evidence-of-hiding-browser-choice-setting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2024\/09\/10\/apple-denies-evidence-of-hiding-browser-choice-setting\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple Denies Evidence of Hiding Browser Choice Setting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2024\/09\/06\/apple-denies-evidence-of-hidden-settings\/\">Hartley Charlton<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2024\/09\/06\/apple-denies-evidence-of-hidden-settings\/\">\n<p>Apple faces allegations of misleading the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) over a user interface issue in iOS related to changing the default browser, <a href=\"https:\/\/open-web-advocacy.org\/blog\/apple-appears-to-mislead-uk-regulator-over-deceptive-default-browser-user-interface\/\">Open Web Advocacy<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Now, in a formal response to the CMA, Apple has denied that this issue ever existed.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Apple has not provided an explanation for how its claim in the August response aligns with these findings, leaving open the question of whether the company's internal processes failed to verify the accuracy of its statements or whether it is actively attempting to minimize the situation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/open-web-advocacy.org\/blog\/apple-appears-to-mislead-uk-regulator-over-deceptive-default-browser-user-interface\/\">Open Web Advocacy<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/open-web-advocacy.org\/blog\/apple-appears-to-mislead-uk-regulator-over-deceptive-default-browser-user-interface\/\"><p>The only realistic interpretation is that statements made by the CMA and OWA on this topic are &ldquo;not correct&rdquo; or false. That is, at the time either OWA or the CMA&rsquo;s statements were written, Apple was not employing a deceptive pattern to hide the option to switch default browser if Safari was the default. This is certainly a bold claim given this was independently verified by us, ArsTechnica and the CMA. This verification included screenshots, documents and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/o6uwiG1nKK4\">a video of the whole process<\/a>.
