The launch follows the service&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/7\/5\/23784263\/instagram-threads-app-download-iphone-android\">debut in the US and over 100 other countries<\/a> across the world, including the UK, in July 2023. But until now, Threads hasn&rsquo;t been available to the 448 million people living in the EU, and the company has even <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/07\/14\/meta-is-blocking-eu-based-users-from-accessing-threads-via-vpn\/\">blocked EU-based users from accessing the service via VPN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To coincide with today&rsquo;s launch, Meta is giving users in the region the ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2023\/07\/introducing-threads-new-app-text-sharing\/#:~:text=Update%20on%20December%2014%2C%202023%20at%203%3A05AM%20PT%3A\">browse Threads without needing a profile<\/a>. Actually posting or interacting with content will still require an Instagram account, however.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@mosseri\/post\/C01zMgWp4V-\">Adam Mosseri<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@mosseri\/post\/C01zMgWp4V-\">\n<p>Second, threads posted by me and a few members of the Threads team will be available on other fediverse platforms like Mastodon starting this week. But here we are.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/2023\/12\/app_store_rankings_as_a_proxy_for_social_network_momentum\">John Gruber<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/2023\/12\/app_store_rankings_as_a_proxy_for_social_network_momentum\">\n<p>It brings me no joy to report this, but unless I scrolled past one, there are no Mastodon clients in the top 200 free apps, even looking specifically within the &ldquo;social networking&rdquo; category, on either the App Store or Play Store. (Twitter\/X categorizes itself as &ldquo;News&rdquo;, not &ldquo;Social&rdquo;, as a sad crutch to place higher in a category with less competition.) Even Bluesky makes these lists (#80 on the App Store; #49 on Play Store).<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Regular people do not want to use social networks without algorithmic feeds, and do not want to use social networks whose basic premise they do not understand.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Previously:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2023\/08\/24\/threads-social-network-expands-to-the-web\/\">Threads Social Network Expands to the Web<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2023\/07\/14\/threads-and-activitypub\/\">Threads and ActivityPub<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2023\/06\/29\/why-has-mastodon-adoption-stalled\/\">Why Has Mastodon Adoption Stalled?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2023\/05\/15\/post-twitter-diaspora-options\/\">Post-Twitter Diaspora Options<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p id=\"threads-in-eu-and-on-activitypub-update-2023-12-22\">Update (2023-12-22): <a href=\"https:\/\/erinkissane.com\/untangling-threads\">Erin Kissane<\/a> (via <a href=\"https:\/\/take.surf\/2023\/12\/22\/erin-kissane-untangling-threads\">Jesper<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/erinkissane.com\/untangling-threads\"><p>For people with those concerns, Threads federation is a pretty big step toward being able to maintain an account on Mastodon (or another fediverse service) and still find the people they want to interact with&mdash;assuming some of those people are on Threads and not only on Bluesky, Twitter\/X, Instagram, and all the other non-ActivityPub-powered systems.<\/p><p>On the flipside, Threads federation gives people on Threads the chance to reconnect with people who left commercial social media for the fediverse&mdash;and, if they get disgusted with Meta, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/7\/5\/23784870\/instagram-threads-adam-mosseri-interview-twitter-competitor\">to migrate much more easily<\/a> to a noncommercial, non-surveillance-based network. <\/p><p>[&#8230;]<\/p><p>The Threads federation conversations that I&rsquo;ve seen so far mostly focus on:<\/p><ul><li>Meta&rsquo;s likelihood of destroying the fediverse via&ldquo;embrace-extend-extinguish&rdquo;<\/li><li>Meta&rsquo;s ability to get hold of pre-Threads fediverse (I&rsquo;ll call it Small Fedi for convenience) users&rsquo; data,<\/li><li>Threads&rsquo; likelihood of fumbling content moderation, and<\/li><li>the correct weighting of Meta being terrible vs. connecting with people who use Threads.<\/li><\/ul><\/blockquote>\n\n<p id=\"threads-in-eu-and-on-activitypub-update-2024-02-01\">Update (2024-02-01): <a href=\"http:\/\/plasticbag.org\/archives\/2024\/01\/how-threads-will-integrate-with-the-fediverse\/\">Tom Coates<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/plasticbag.org\/archives\/2024\/01\/how-threads-will-integrate-with-the-fediverse\/\">\n<p>Now, I mentioned above that the people we met at Meta seemed like decent, well-intentioned people attempting to do the right thing. However, this may not be enough to be a &lsquo;good citizen&rsquo;. And to understand why I think it&rsquo;s worth talking briefly about the scale of the various parties.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Meta can currently claim around 160 million total users and about 100 million MAUs for Threads alone. So, again, maybe we shouldn&rsquo;t be thinking about Threads &lsquo;integrating&rsquo; with the fediverse and instead think about Threads attempting to engage with the Fediverse without entirely crushing it in the process.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/pxlnv.com\/linklog\/threads-fediverse-integration\/\">Nick Heer<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/pxlnv.com\/linklog\/threads-fediverse-integration\/\">\n<p>I found myself nodding along with Coates&rsquo; description of the challenges of trying to fit the Meta model into the fediverse, and vice versa. It is not impossible, it is going to require a lot of work, and it sounds like Meta wants to make a good faith effort.
