He used a computer (not a pencil and paper), but absolutely nothing was left to computer-assisted happenstance. Imus spent eons tweaking label positions. Slaving over font types, kerning, letter thicknesses. Scrutinizing levels of blackness. It&rsquo;s the kind of personal cartographic touch you might only find these days on the hand-illustrated ski-trail maps available at posh mountain resorts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This reminded me of <a href=\"http:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/13\/google-maps-label-readability\/\">Justin O&rsquo;Beirne&rsquo;s posts<\/a>, which I&rsquo;m sorry to see are now gone, about the Google and Bing maps.<\/p>\n<p>Update (2012-01-03): <a href=\"https:\/\/imusgeographics.com\">Imus&rsquo;s site<\/a> was down when I first posted this, but now it&rsquo;s back up.
