{"id":38664,"date":"2023-03-02T13:47:21","date_gmt":"2023-03-02T18:47:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/?p=38664"},"modified":"2023-03-02T20:30:44","modified_gmt":"2023-03-03T01:30:44","slug":"outlook-syncing-with-microsoft-cloud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2023\/03\/02\/outlook-syncing-with-microsoft-cloud\/","title":{"rendered":"Outlook Syncing With Microsoft Cloud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mothsoftware.com\/microsoft-outlook-now-uses-microsoft-synch-technology-without-asking-the-user\">Beatrix Willius<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.mothsoftware.com\/microsoft-outlook-now-uses-microsoft-synch-technology-without-asking-the-user\"><p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heise.de\/news\/Microsoft-IMAP-Umleitung-in-Outlook-nach-Office-Update-jetzt-auch-auf-Macs-7477743.html\">German computer magazine Heise<\/a> Outlook is now using &ldquo;Microsoft Synch Technology&rdquo; without asking the user.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When you create a new account, there&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/add-email-accounts-in-outlook-for-mac-using-microsoft-cloud-6eba6aa5-3e23-45b3-aba1-bceb41aba78e\">a checkbox to opt out<\/a>, but the <em>Heise<\/em> article implies that existing accounts are automatically opted in and you have to delete and recreate them to opt out:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.mothsoftware.com\/microsoft-outlook-now-uses-microsoft-synch-technology-without-asking-the-user\">\n<p>A reader pointed out to us that the previously established direct retrieval of an IMAP account with him now also takes detours via Azure. [Apple translation]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This seems really bad to do without consent, but perhaps the reader is mistaken or it&rsquo;s a bad translation.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, when I tried adding a Gmail account, the <strong>Sync with Microsoft Cloud<\/strong> option was present but pre-checked.<\/p>\n<p>But today, when I did the same thing, the wizard did not offer me the option. It briefly showed some text saying that &ldquo;for a better experience&rdquo; it was going to sync with Microsoft, but before I could take a screenshot it switched to the next page. The configured Gmail account did <em>not<\/em> show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mothsoftware.com\/cms-data\/gallery\/hipwig\/account-with-synch.jpg\">any indication<\/a> that Microsoft sync was in use.<\/p>\n<p>I then tried adding an IMAP account, and the <strong>Sync with Microsoft Cloud<\/strong> option was not presented at all. I don&rsquo;t understand why Outlook seems to be behaving inconsistently.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/sync-your-account-in-outlook-to-the-microsoft-cloud-985f9e19-d308-4e85-9d1d-0c6f32f8e981\">Microsoft<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/sync-your-account-in-outlook-to-the-microsoft-cloud-985f9e19-d308-4e85-9d1d-0c6f32f8e981\">\n<p>Syncing your account to the Microsoft Cloud means that a copy of your email, calendar, and contacts will be synchronized between your email provider and Microsoft data centers.
