At first, I thought it was another variant of the &ldquo;This copy of the Install OS X El Capitan application can&rsquo;t be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading&rdquo; error, which indicates an <a href=\"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2019\/08\/28\/installing-old-versions-of-macos\/\">expired certificate<\/a>. But setting the Mac&rsquo;s clock back didn&rsquo;t help, and neither did <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT211683\">downloading a fresh copy<\/a> of the installer.<\/p>\n<p>I eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/discussions.apple.com\/thread\/7423853\">figured<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/applehelp\/comments\/7or9ue\/macbook_pro_2011_cant_install_os_volume_contains\/\">out<\/a> that the destination volume, though it looked empty, contained the remnants of <em>something<\/em>. After I erased it with Disk Utility, the installation proceeded normally.
