Alexander was the author or principal author of many books, including <em>A Pattern Language<\/em>, one of the best-selling architectural books of all time. He is considered to be the father of the pattern language movement in software, which is the idea behind Wikipedia.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My understanding is that Wikipedia was inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WikiWikiWeb\">WikiWikiWeb<\/a>, a wiki about software design patterns, not that the software movement was the idea for Wikipedia. However, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/arl.human.cornell.edu\/linked%20docs\/Alexander_A_Pattern_Language.pdf\">A Pattern Language<\/a><\/em> likely influenced the form of the C2 wiki&mdash;not just its content&mdash;since the book itself is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patternlanguage.com\/ca\/ca.html\">written like a wiki<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AaronHillegass\/status\/1504947467707723778\">Aaron Hillegass<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AaronHillegass\/status\/1504947467707723778\"><p>One day in the early 90s, I started reading &ldquo;A Pattern Language&rdquo; in a bookstore in Austin.
