Key features include 2 gigabytes of email storage for each user, easy to use customization tools, and help for administrators via email or an online help center. Furthermore, organizations that sign up during the beta period will not ever have to pay for users accepted during that period (provided Google continues to offer the service).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2022\/01\/19\/g-suite-legacy-free-edition\/\">Abner Li<\/a> (via <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=29996432\">Hacker News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/world.hey.com\/dhh\/free-is-never-forever-b2e8f8df\">David Heinemeier Hansson<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2022\/01\/19\/g-suite-legacy-free-edition\/\">\n<p>In 2020, G Suite <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2020\/10\/06\/google-workspace\/\">became Google Workspace<\/a> as part of a mass reorganization of the company&rsquo;s apps for the &ldquo;future of work.&rdquo; Various plans were migrated over, and Google is now finally getting rid of the G Suite legacy free edition.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Google Apps&rdquo; for businesses and schools were introduced 16 years ago and was discontinued in 2012. However, the company made <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.googleblog.com\/2012\/12\/changes-to-google-apps-for-businesses.html\">no significant changes<\/a> to those free accounts in the past decade, until today.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>After getting free Gmail, Drive, Docs, and other apps for the past several years, companies\/people will need to start paying for those Google services and the ability to use your own custom domain (instead of just gmail.com).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/workspace.google.com\/pricing.html\">new plans<\/a> start at $6\/month.<\/p>\n\n<p>Previously:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2020\/11\/11\/google-photos-to-end-unlimited-storage\/\">Google Photos to End Unlimited Storage<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p id=\"g-suite-removes-free-plans-update-2022-01-24\">Update (2022-01-24): <a href=\"https:\/\/www.androidpolice.com\/google-gsuite-free-legacy-class-action-investigation\/\">Ryne Hager<\/a> (via <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=30030608\">Hacker News<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.androidpolice.com\/google-gsuite-free-legacy-class-action-investigation\/\"><p>No lawsuit has been filed yet; the attorneys involved are just collecting information for a potential lawsuit in the future once all the facts are straight (and Google has had time to reconsider its actions).<\/p>\n<p>When we covered the original news of the legacy G Suite shutdown, it seemed unreasonable to us, because customers using those legacy accounts are unable to transfer purchases or things like grandfathered subscription discounts to new accounts. When we asked if moving purchases between accounts might be possible, a Google representative confirmed it wasn&rsquo;t[&#8230;]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/neil_jhaveri\/status\/1484598296106749961\">Neil Jhaveri<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/neil_jhaveri\/status\/1484598296106749961\">\n<p>If you&rsquo;re currently a Legacy G Suite user, the free plan will end by July 1st. I&rsquo;m curious: what do you plan to do?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p id=\"g-suite-removes-free-plans-update-2022-02-16\">Update (2022-02-16): <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2022\/01\/google-relents-legacy-g-suite-users-will-be-able-to-migrate-to-free-accounts\/\">Ron Amadeo<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2022\/01\/google-relents-legacy-g-suite-users-will-be-able-to-migrate-to-free-accounts\/\">\n<p>Naturally, this move led to a huge outcry outside (and apparently inside) Google, and now, the company seems to be backing down from most of the harsher terms of the initial announcement. First, Google is launching a survey of affected G Suite users&mdash;apparently, the company is surprised by how many people this change affected. Second, it's promising a data-migration option (including your content purchases) to a consumer account before the shutdown hits.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Update (2022-05-17): <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jgordonshare\/status\/1526377939100741632\">John Gordon<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jgordonshare\/status\/1526377939100741632\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/a\/answer\/2855120?hl=en\">Google reprieve<\/a> came. We can continue our non-business legacy Google Apps.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2022\/05\/16\/no-cost-legacy-g-suite\/\">Abner Li<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2022\/05\/16\/no-cost-legacy-g-suite\/\">\n<p>The company will now let you stay on a &ldquo;Free Legacy Edition of G Suite for personal use&rdquo; as the &ldquo;no-cost&rdquo; alternative in a rather notable policy change.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>In a change of plans, there&rsquo;s no longer a waiting list, and these old users can sign-up for no-cost Legacy G Suite now. Head to your account&rsquo;s Google Admin Console as there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/gsuitelegacymigration\/comments\/ur3hh9\/personaly_use_option_is_live\/\">many reports<\/a> of it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/gsuitelegacymigration\/comments\/ur3ahu\/free_optout_free_for_personnal_use_option_rolling\/\">going live<\/a> this afternoon.
