{"id":34156,"date":"2021-11-12T16:46:43","date_gmt":"2021-11-12T21:46:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/?p=34156"},"modified":"2021-11-12T16:46:43","modified_gmt":"2021-11-12T21:46:43","slug":"offline-translation-in-monterey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2021\/11\/12\/offline-translation-in-monterey\/","title":{"rendered":"Offline Translation in Monterey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eclecticlight.co\/2021\/11\/10\/how-to-use-offline-translation-in-monterey\/\">Howard Oakley<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/eclecticlight.co\/2021\/11\/10\/how-to-use-offline-translation-in-monterey\/\">\n<p>The basics are very simple: select the text you want to translate, which could have been recognised and converted using Monterey&rsquo;s new Live Text feature, bring up the contextual menu (Control-click, two-finger tap, etc.) and from that select the Translate &#8230; command.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>I therefore recommend that, for the time being at least, and for those languages you&rsquo;re most likely to use, you enable offline translation and download the supporting files required.<\/p>\n<p>Do this by clicking on the new <strong>Translation Languages&#8230;<\/strong> button at the foot of the <strong>General<\/strong> tab in the <strong>Languages &amp; Region<\/strong> pane.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is a useful feature, but I ran into some issues with how it&rsquo;s implemented:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><p>It doesn&rsquo;t work for me in Safari. I just get an empty popover that never fills in, even when the exact same text worked in another app. I wonder if this is related to the fact that System Preferences says that Safari <em>always<\/em> processes translations online. However, I haven&rsquo;t downloaded any languages for offline translation yet.<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>Text in the popover isn&rsquo;t selectable, and it disappears when I switch to another app, so I can&rsquo;t reference it when working in another window. I would prefer that the translation open in a real window or even in a separate Translate app.<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>The command isn&rsquo;t available in BBEdit or, presumably, other apps with custom text views. Why is it not implemented as a system service?
