{"id":28356,"date":"2020-03-10T16:00:10","date_gmt":"2020-03-10T20:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/?p=28356"},"modified":"2020-03-10T16:00:10","modified_gmt":"2020-03-10T20:00:10","slug":"googles-software-based-3d-touch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2020\/03\/10\/googles-software-based-3d-touch\/","title":{"rendered":"Google&rsquo;s Software-based 3D Touch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/3\/3\/21162272\/google-pixel-feature-drop-firm-press-3d-touch-card-boarding-pass\">Dieter Bohn<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/3\/3\/21162272\/google-pixel-feature-drop-firm-press-3d-touch-card-boarding-pass\"><p>But there was one line on <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/pixelphone\/thread\/32077388?hl=en\">Google&rsquo;s support page<\/a> for the update that caught my eye (emphasis mine): &ldquo;In addition to long press, you can now <strong>firmly press<\/strong> to get more help from your apps more quickly.&rdquo;<\/p><p>&ldquo;Firmly press&rdquo; sets off alarm bells because it sounds a lot like the iPhone&rsquo;s 3D Touch, which enables different actions depending on how hard you press on the touchscreen.<\/p><p>[&#8230;]<\/p><p>But now, it seems that Google has done the same thing for the touchscreen that it does with the camera: use its software algorithms to make commodity parts do something special.<\/p><p>[&#8230;]<\/p><p>Essentially, this new feature lets you press harder to bring up long-press menus faster. In fact, Google&rsquo;s documentation for Android&rsquo;s Deep Press API explicitly says it should never do a new thing, it should only be a faster way to execute a long press.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/pxlnv.com\/linklog\/android-3d-touch\/\">Nick Heer<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/pxlnv.com\/linklog\/android-3d-touch\/\">\n<p>As of last year, the hardware-based version of 3D Touch no longer exists; new iPhones do not have the component that registers touch pressure, and iPads never did.
