{"id":27865,"date":"2020-01-14T20:22:12","date_gmt":"2020-01-15T01:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/?p=27865"},"modified":"2020-01-24T15:39:03","modified_gmt":"2020-01-24T20:39:03","slug":"low-power-mode-for-mac-laptops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2020\/01\/14\/low-power-mode-for-mac-laptops\/","title":{"rendered":"Low Power Mode for Mac Laptops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/marco.org\/2020\/01\/13\/macos-low-power-mode-redux\">Marco Arment<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marcoarment\/status\/1216893175484289026\">tweet<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/marco.org\/2020\/01\/13\/macos-low-power-mode-redux\">\n<p>In light of today&rsquo;s rumor that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2020\/01\/13\/pro-mode-macos-catalina-beta\/\">a Pro Mode may be coming<\/a> that seems to offer benefits in the opposite direction, I wanted to re-make the case for a Low Power Mode on macOS &mdash; and explain why <strong>now<\/strong> is the time.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Apple&rsquo;s customers don&rsquo;t usually have control over these balances, and they&rsquo;re usually fixed at design time with little opportunity to adapt to changing circumstances or customer priorities.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Turbo Boost Switcher Pro relies on a kernel extension that&rsquo;s grandfathered into Apple&rsquo;s latest security requirements, but it can never be updated &mdash; and when macOS Catalina loads it for the first time, it <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.promise.com\/thread\/sanlink3-t1-catalina-10-15-mac-support\/\">warns that it&rsquo;ll be &ldquo;incompatible with a future version of macOS.&rdquo;<\/a> I suspect that this is the last year I&rsquo;ll get to run the latest OS <strong>and<\/strong> be able to turn off Turbo Boost at will, making all of my future laptop usage significantly worse.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Previously:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2018\/08\/01\/low-power-mode-on-the-mac\/\">Low Power Mode on the Mac<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p id=\"low-power-mode-for-mac-laptops-update-2020-01-24\">Update (2020-01-24): <a href=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/linked\/2020\/01\/17\/low-power-mode-for-macbooks\">John Gruber<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/linked\/2020\/01\/17\/low-power-mode-for-macbooks\">\n<p>Note too that iOS&rsquo;s Low Power Mode is for iPhones only&#x2009;&mdash;&#x2009;iPads don&rsquo;t have it. That bodes poorly for the odds of a Low Power Mode for MacBooks&#x2009;&mdash;&#x2009;it feels like a feature Apple believes is needed only for phones.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sixcolors.com\/post\/2020\/01\/clever-powerful-useful-time-to-upgrade-the-macs-energy-settings\/\">Jason Snell<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/sixcolors.com\/post\/2020\/01\/clever-powerful-useful-time-to-upgrade-the-macs-energy-settings\/\"><p>I&rsquo;m all for the idea of a low-power mode for Macs, and it&rsquo;s a bit perplexing to see Apple prioritize turning off all battery-saving features and cranking the fans over letting users maximize battery life.<\/p>\n<p>I do have a wacky idea, though. (You knew I would.)
