{"id":26669,"date":"2019-09-25T16:36:48","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T20:36:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/?p=26669"},"modified":"2019-09-26T13:41:24","modified_gmt":"2019-09-26T17:41:24","slug":"ios-13-and-13-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2019\/09\/25\/ios-13-and-13-1\/","title":{"rendered":"iOS 13 and 13.1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macstories.net\/stories\/ios-and-ipados-13-the-macstories-review\/\">Federico Viticci<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.macstories.net\/stories\/ios-and-ipados-13-the-macstories-review\/\">\n<p>For the first time since I started reviewing Apple&rsquo;s annual iOS updates, it feels like the company is now keenly aware that a new iOS version <em>has to<\/em> cover an array of themes that can&rsquo;t be pushed back for scheduling reasons.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>As a result, there&rsquo;s something for everyone in iOS 13 and all the recurring themes of Tim Cook&rsquo;s Apple are touched upon this time around.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>From this standpoint, there are two sides to iOS 13: on one hand, an underlying tide that raises all platforms, featuring a distillation of themes Apple comes back to on an annual basis; on the other, a fork in the road, opening a new path for the iPad&rsquo;s next decade.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2019\/09\/ios-13-the-ars-technica-review\/\">Samuel Axon<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2019\/09\/ios-13-the-ars-technica-review\/\">\n<p>Apple hasn&rsquo;t tempered expectations for iOS 13 this year, so users might be expecting a big leap forward. iOS 13 does bring a new look to the software that runs on iPhones, overhauls a few oft-criticized first-party applications, and puts additional emphasis on user privacy. Most of all, it adds new, powerful interactions for power users&mdash;some of which we thought we&rsquo;d never see in Apple&rsquo;s mobile software.<\/p>\n<p>iOS 13 is successful at most of what it sets out to do, even though it leaves some things that users have wanted to see overhauled&mdash;like the home screen&mdash;relatively untouched.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/ipados\/\">Apple<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=21061345\">Hacker News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/techinsider\/status\/1176230252986523648\">video<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/ipados\/\">\n<p>Part of the magic of iPad is that almost anything can be done with Multi-Touch using simple, intuitive gestures. And now iPadOS makes it easier and faster to select and edit text using just your&nbsp;fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Copy, paste, undo, and more with simple new gestures.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/apple-ios-13-arrives\/\">Lauren Goode<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/apple-ios-13-arrives\/\">\n<p>Something atypical for Apple is iOS 13&rsquo;s notably buggy rollout.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/linked\/2019\/09\/19\/ios-13-is-buggy\">John Gruber<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/linked\/2019\/09\/19\/ios-13-is-buggy\">\n<p>13.0 is really buggy &mdash; I&rsquo;ve been using it on my iPhone 11 review units.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Best theory I&rsquo;ve seen so far as to why Apple is going ahead with a wide 13.0 release instead of just waiting until next week for 13.1&#x2009;&mdash;&#x2009;Apple Watch Series 5 requires iOS 13 on the iPhone it&rsquo;s paired with. So people getting new watches tomorrow need to update their iPhone to iOS 13 tomorrow. This raises the question of why Apple didn&rsquo;t delay the release of the Series 5 watches until iOS 13.1 was out.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LaurenGoode\/status\/1174734354548813824\">Lauren Goode<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LaurenGoode\/status\/1174734354548813824\">\n<p>iOS 13.1, the next (and presumably more stable) version of the software will ship September 24, <em>not<\/em> September 30 as previously expected &amp; reported.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marcoarment\/status\/1174749680112152577\">Marco Arment<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marcoarment\/status\/1174749680112152577\">\n<p>Software quality is not important enough to delay the release of the iPhone.<\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s not the way we may want it to be &mdash;&nbsp;and not the way THEY probably want it to be &mdash; but that&rsquo;s the way it is.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HoraceHuck\/status\/1174753599739420672\">Buck<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HoraceHuck\/status\/1174753599739420672\">\n<p>I wish they would uncouple iOS releases from iPhone releases - at least occasionally - so we could have a longer cycle of focusing on fixing existing issues. Apple&rsquo;s Reminders app was always pretty useless. In [iOS 13], it is actively hostile, &ldquo;upgrading&rdquo; the calendars, and thus <em>deleting<\/em> them from every other app.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nshipster.com\/ios-13\/\">Mattt Thompson<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/nshipster.com\/ios-13\/\">\n<p>Although the lion&rsquo;s share of attention has been showered on the aforementioned features, not nearly enough coverage has been given to the rest of iOS 13 &mdash; and that&rsquo;s a shame, because this release is among the most exciting in terms of new functionality and satisfying in terms of improving existing functionality.<\/p>\n<p>So to mark last week&rsquo;s release of iOS 13, we&rsquo;re taking a look at some obscure (largely undocumented) APIs that you can now use in your apps.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tidbits.com\/2019\/09\/24\/features-added-in-ios-13-1-personal-automations-driving-eta-and-more\/\">Josh Centers<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/tidbits.com\/2019\/09\/24\/features-added-in-ios-13-1-personal-automations-driving-eta-and-more\/\">\n<p>Personal automations let you do things like start playing a particular playlist whenever you open a certain app, dim the screen brightness when Low Power Mode turns on, or turn off your cellular data connection when you connect to your home Wi-Fi network.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>iOS 13.1&rsquo;s new audio sharing feature lets two pairs of AirPods listen to audio from a single device. (This feature also works with Beats earbuds and headphones powered by Apple&rsquo;s W1 or H1 chip.) The &ldquo;broadcast&rdquo; device needs to be relatively recent, like an iPhone 8 or later. While one iOS 13.1 device is playing audio, place another iOS 13.1 device paired with a second set of AirPods or the like nearby to see an option to share audio.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Even after the release of iOS 13.1, some promised iOS 13 features are still missing and continue to be promised for later this year, perhaps in iOS 13.2 or later.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jeffhunterx\/status\/1176558992157364224\">Jeff Hunter<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jeffhunterx\/status\/1176558992157364224\">\n<p>Guess what, the navigation bar \/ search controller bug introduced in the iOS 13.1 betas has <em>not<\/em> been fixed in 13.1 GM!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>I&rsquo;m waiting for at last another release.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/macguru17\/status\/1176158709241798656\">Max Seelemann<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/macguru17\/status\/1176158709241798656\">\n<p>Xcode 11 GM2 broke localization of static take view cells in storyboards. &#x1F61E; (FB7302304)<\/p>\n<p>Anybody know when this is traditionally going to be fixed?
