One of the\r\nabsolute worst<\/em> features of C++ is how it makes a\r\nlot of things so context-dependent—which just means\r\nthat when you look at the code, a local view simply seldom\r\ngives enough context to know what is going on.\r\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\r\n

There’s no “debugger” in communication. There is no IDE\r\nthat helps figure out what’s going on. There is no syntax\r\nhighlighting etc.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

There are just e-mails with patches and suggestions flying\r\naround. There’s no room for special tools—if you as a\r\nhuman cannot see what the code does from the change,\r\nit’s a problem. And you usually see about three lines of\r\ncontext around the code.\r\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\r\n

In this situation with hundreds or thousands of developers, primitive tools, and a huge code base, it makes more sense to optimize for clarity than conciseness or abstraction power.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
