There is only one task (MoneyWell) that I haven&rsquo;t been able to achieve with my new Linux or FreeBSD systems.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Over the year I think what I value in an operating system has shifted. I went\nin valuing design, consistency, and attention to detail. I definitely still\nvalue those things but I think I&rsquo;ve softened on them. I&rsquo;m willing to settle for\na few rough edges. In return I get:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Systems that are always up to date<\/li>\n<li>More hardware options<\/li>\n<li>Upgradeable hardware<\/li>\n<li>The ability to build an environment that works for me<\/li>\n<li>&ldquo;The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it\ndoes your computing as you wish&rdquo;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>That last one has come as a bit of a surprise. I&rsquo;ve always been a fan of open\nsource but was happy to use well-made proprietary software. It turns out that\nwhen a huge portion of your system is open source your perspective changes.\nJumping through hoops to install proprietary software (that&rsquo;s not in the\nsystem package repos) is kind of a drag, and feels sort of wrong for the\nsystem.<\/p>\n\n<p>There&rsquo;s also something wonderful about public bug trackers.
