{"id":20133,"date":"2018-01-11T13:09:56","date_gmt":"2018-01-11T18:09:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/?p=20133"},"modified":"2018-01-14T16:43:07","modified_gmt":"2018-01-14T21:43:07","slug":"apple-comments-on-airports-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2018\/01\/11\/apple-comments-on-airports-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple Comments on AirPort&rsquo;s Future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2018\/01\/11\/apple-comment-airport-future\/\">Christian Zibreg<\/a> (via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mattbirchler\/status\/951491249940389889\">Matt Birchler<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2018\/01\/11\/apple-comment-airport-future\/\"><p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2018\/01\/11\/apple-linksys-velop-mesh-wi-fi\/\">Apple started selling<\/a>  the first third-party Wi-Fi router in the form of Linksys&rsquo; Velop, its spokesperson provided a comment regarding the future of its own AirPort line of appliances.<\/p><p>In a statement to 9to5Mac, which first spotted the presence of Velop devices on Apple&rsquo;s online and retail stores, Apple <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2018\/01\/10\/apple-mesh-wifi-system-airport\/\">acknowledged<\/a> that it&rsquo;s still selling AirPort Wi-Fi base stations: [&#8230;] Unfortunately, the cryptic comment doesn&rsquo;t say whether Apple plans on keeping AirPort alive.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.asymco.com\/2011\/01\/17\/the-cook-doctrine\/\">Tim Cook<\/a> in 2009:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/www.asymco.com\/2011\/01\/17\/the-cook-doctrine\/\">\n<p>We believe that we need to own and control the primary technologies behind the products we make, and participate only in markets where we can make a significant contribution.<\/p>\n<p>We believe in saying no to thousands of projects so that we can really focus on the few that are truly important and meaningful to us.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Previously: <a href=\"https:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2016\/11\/21\/apple-abandons-development-of-wireless-routers\/\">Apple Abandons Development of Wireless Routers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Update (2018-01-12): <a href=\"https:\/\/pxlnv.com\/linklog\/linksys-future-of-airport\/\">Nick Heer<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/pxlnv.com\/linklog\/linksys-future-of-airport\/\">\n<p>A reader email reminded me that Apple took <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/here-is-every-patch-for-krack-wi-fi-attack-available-right-now\/\">at least<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macobserver.com\/news\/product-news\/apple-patches-krack-airport-firmware-updates\/\">two months to patch<\/a> their base station products to protect against a <a href=\"https:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2017\/10\/what-you-should-know-about-the-krack-wifi-security-weakness\/\">significant WiFi vulnerability<\/a>. iOS and MacOS were updated <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2017\/10\/apple-releases-macos-10-13-1-and-ios-11-1-with-a-krack-fix-and-new-emoji\/\">within two <em>weeks<\/em><\/a>.
