And therein lies the rub. Intel-based Macs can&rsquo;t boot\r\nfrom older APM drives, and PowerPC-based Macs can&rsquo;t boot from newer GPT\r\ndrives. This appears to be a permanent situation&mdash;each scheme makes\r\nincompatible assumptions about the layout of physical block 1 on the\r\ndisk. While GPT was designed to be compatible with Master Block Record\r\n(MBR, the PC&rsquo;s old partition scheme), it doesn&rsquo;t play nicely with APM.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<p>\r\nThe main reason I haven&rsquo;t switched over to using the <a\r\nhref=\"http:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2006\/01\/19\/imac-core-duo-the-first-afternoon\/\">iMac Core Duo<\/a> as my main machine is that my DiskWarrior\r\nCD can&rsquo;t boot it, and DiskWarrior can&rsquo;t repair the internal drive using\r\nTarget Disk Mode because of the new partitioning.\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jonathan Rentzsch: GPT replaces Apple Partition Map (APM) as the boot partition scheme for Intel-based Macs.
