Backup 3&rsquo;s high production values can lull even those who should know better into a false sense of security.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>\nI&rsquo;d be interested to know to know whether the recent Backup 3.0.1 update fixes the problems, but who&rsquo;d want to risk their data with it now? Also, the Mac-savvy <tt>rsync<\/tt> in Tiger should be <em>great<\/em> for certain kinds of backups, but it&rsquo;s still <a href=\"http:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2005\/05\/01\/random-tiger-notes\/\">unreliable<\/a> and slow.\n<\/p>\n\n<p>\nThe new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dantz.com\/en\/products\/mac_personal\/index.dtml\">Retrospect 6.1<\/a> doesn&rsquo;t seem to be much of an improvement, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirt-pocket.com\/SuperDuper\/SuperDuperDescription.html\">SuperDuper<\/a> seems to be a quality product, but it&rsquo;s currently too basic. So I use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qdea.com\/pages\/pages-sprox\/sprox1.html\">Synchronize! Pro X<\/a> for hard-disk backups with crude versioning (Unfortunately, contrary to my <a href=\"http:\/\/mjtsai.com\/blog\/2005\/09\/04\/synchronize-pro-x-411\/\">previous report<\/a>, the alias logging problem is <em>not<\/em> fixed in 4.1.1.) and <a href=\"http:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\">DropDMG<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/manual-ah\/creating-cd-and-dvd-bac\">archiving to CD\/DVD<\/a>. I&rsquo;d <em>like<\/em> a comprehensive backup program, but how likely is that with <a href=\"http:\/\/patft.uspto.gov\/netacgi\/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;p=1&amp;u=\/netahtml\/search-bool.html&amp;r=3&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;co1=AND&amp;d=ptxt&amp;s1=dantz.ASNM.&amp;OS=AN\/dantz&amp;RS=AN\/dantz\">Dantz&rsquo;s patent<\/a> and Apple&rsquo;s &ldquo;free&rdquo; software:\n<\/p>\n\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/rentzsch.com\/suck\/backup3\">\n<p>Unfortunately, the harm doesn&#8217;t end just in the black eye for Apple&#8217;s software quality-control, the valuation of .Mac, or the users who will lose data.
