Unexpected benefits of iPhone 4S/iOS 5: way better at acquiring MicroCell, better auto-correction.
@irons Strangely, my parents have the original Time Capsule and have only had one corruption.
@nriley Interesting. I've usually heard that Time Capsule internal drive works better than TC USB drive, which works better than a Mac.
@schwa Yeah. Corruption. Blocking other network traffic. Long pauses in apps.
@danielpunkass Good idea. I could never get Time Machine to work properly over the network, though.
@rentzsch I also use a fanless toaster with a low-RPM drive, on a mouse pad for damping. Everything seems loud after switching to SSD.
@rentzsch I like how quiet my desk is since I replaced Time Machine with Arq.
@marcoarment I don't recall you addressing that it's suspected that The New Yorker loses money most years. Quality is expensive.
@scott_lowe You can do this with a bookmarklet or script. http://t.co/zy8JMJos Modifier key is a feature I'd like to add.
@marcoarment For me, Safari seems to be reloading pages *more* often for no good reason.
@grantosborne I did, too. Nothing wrong with buying the better product.
@the_proton Thanks for the link.
And the other benefit of using Skim to read PDFs: no annoying page-turn animation. (Yes, I know it's suppressed if you hold down Option.)
@danielpunkass Yep. It's writing to the plist that's not in ~/Containers. Gotta love the sandbox.
@leebennett No. I see that you posted and deleted a test comment, though.
@Stormchild Sure, you can check existence of menu items by name. Or just click them by position.
@Stormchild I just run it via FastScripts. :)
@Stormchild Put the whole thing inside: tell app "System Events"
@Stormchild tell application process "Preview"
click menu item "Single Page" of menu "View" of menu bar 1
end tell
@alan_schmitt Hmm, good idea. I'll try making Skim my default PDF viewer.
@cocoadog It's easier to *see* FW400, but when you're feeling around behind the Mac/drive you can't force a FW800 in the wrong way.
@Stormchild @Stormchild It worked in 10.7.1, I think. I made a "System Events" script and assigned it a key with FastScripts.
@schwa Awesome except that I've seen the put in backwards.
Maybe I can work around that with FastScripts.
No way to set the default view mode for Preview in Lion, so I had assigned a keyboard shortcut to "Single Page". Now that stopped working.
@jgpmolloy I had a corrupted search box icon in the Finder. OK, will look into whether there's a way to update the audio stuff.
@jgpmolloy I don't think my speakers have drivers. The panic log seems to point to the graphics card.
@jgpmolloy Do you mean like USB speakers?
@danielpunkass It will disallow the switch if there's an external display; or prevent detecting a display if you switch to Integrated first.
@glgray Thanks, but I need my external display.
@danielpunkass How did you do that? I'm assuming that won't work if there's an external display, though…
@glgray Yep, that's what I've got. 15-inch i7 MacBook Pro with 330M.
Getting really tired of these kernel panics due to Apple's GeForce driver. Started with Lion, I think.
@georgedick I see. Guess I've been lucky not to have that particular problem yet.
@georgedick Well, but who am I going to call with no signal? Or do you frequently get bars without EDGE or 3G?
@otolithe Exactly.
@otolithe Better than nothing, I suppose.
Siri regression: voice control of my music no longer works without a cell connection.
@danielpunkass Right. Although prior to now I had never selected anything…
@danielpunkass I suppose. Odd that it's intermittent, though.
I wonder what http://t.co/u9iq7TJX is doing that sometimes Safari refuses to save a page via Command-S but it does work via the menu.
@incanus77 I'm sure. (But even if they did, if the note shows up in an account in Notes, it should get synced to that account!)
@incanus77 I'm talking about Notes, not Reminders. But, yes, I just have iCloud.
@mjtsai No. But I have notes set to only sync over the air; otherwise it says there will be duplicates.
Making a one-character edit on the phone causes the note to sync. But I need to see the notes on the Mac; won't remember to check the phone.
@simX Thanks, but I can see in the Notes app that they're in the correct account.
@Hunter I can't even imagine how to code a bug like this.
@Hunter The default account is the iCloud account. And I can see in the Notes app that the notes are all in the iCloud account.
All the notes I manually create on the phone show up in Mail and http://t.co/SekwVt9j; none of the Siri-created ones do.
Just realized that I don't need to mess around with /usr/bin/zip; I can just edit the archive directly in BBEdit.
@nriley No, but it seems to be discarding/reloading more tabs than before…
@danielpunkass Looks like that would help. Thanks!
@_karsten_ Yeah, I was burning older music for the car today, too. It's extra fun when it's a mix of MP3 and AAC tracks.
@_karsten_ I'm thinking it would save a few steps to buy from Amazon in MP3 format.
@kevinhoctor Back when I was using Time Machine (over FireWire) it took way longer than 8 hours to back up 325 GB…
Doing the old "change iTunes import settings, Create MP3 Version, make playlist, burn CD, delete MP3 version, change import settings" dance.
@Stormchild Find My iPhone didn't work for me at all the first day. Now it does. Didn't change anything.
@danwood Could you send me some of the relevant log entries?
4th restore. This time I'm testing the theory that calendars will sync without hanging if I submit to using iCloud.
@rentzsch A couple hours. Mostly due to poor signal strength, I think. (After activation, it found my MicroCell.)
@rentzsch I got that, too, and it did activate eventually, but no e-mail.
The Wi-Fi Sync seems to be killing my Mac's Internet connection.
Not sure what to make of Businessweek's Fadell update. It had been reported for years that he wanted to use Linux for iPhone OS.
@ianwessman Well, first of all, Windows only gets the key-value stuff, which will probably have Web APIs, too. Secondly, no MAS on Windows.
Thanks to iOS 5, I've got a separate USB hub that's only for charging devices. Hopefully will reduce problems with hard drives on the bus.
@Stormchild Well, I'm an outsider who doesn't know what he's talking about, but a lot of it rang true to me.
@kcase I see old versions of some apps, but not for the iWork apps where the requirements did change.
@curtclifton No, it's in my home folder. Not encrypted.
@curtclifton Not sure why, but I have no "Previous Mobile Applications" folder.
@curtclifton Really? I've never seen any evidence of that.
@Stormchild Yep, that sounds like the way to do it. ;(
@Stormchild I've got a clone I can pull them from. But going forward iTunes is going to make it really difficult to maintain this setup.
@joeldev That's exactly my point. No longer a way to sync to a device that you plan to keep on iOS 4.
iTunes deleted my old versions of the iWork apps, but the new versions don't run on iOS 4.
Apple's support download pages down (404) for the last hour but seem to be working now.
@marcoarment Wow. How many years have we waited for that?
Got the dreaded "We are unable to completion your transaction online." Solution was to change the AT&T *billing* address not to be a PO Box.
@mikeash That's awesome. But what is this, Bungie remembrance day?
@petermaurer I actually really like the metal look on the original. The 3G/S looks kind of cheap, plus the gaudy side buttons.
@petermaurer Hmm, I felt quite a difference between the 4 and the original, and find the 3G/S much more comfortable than either.
@petermaurer It looks great, but don't you find it uncomfortable to hold compared to the 3G/3GS?
@uliwitness Sad but true.
@siracusa The iPad would be such a great fit for Myth.
dropdmg DropDMG 3.1 adds layout text boxes (w/ placeholder variables), faster disk image creation, shadow mounting, and more: http://t.co/zIMoUdB0
@jsnell Yeah, the hidden mode is a strange design. Seems like it should be just a list of app names at the left and details at right.
Trying a new BBEdit workflow: MDI only for projects and smaller, task-specific project files rather than one huge one per logical project.
E-junkie's generally been good, but these "10002 Restricted Account" errors are a problem. http://t.co/IdDOwifr Temporarily switched carts.
eaglefiler EagleFiler 1.5.6 improves tag cloud, vCard display, adds scripts for duplicates and scanning, and more: http://t.co/WfajmEfl
Maybe my memory is failing, but I'm pretty sure that there's a digit missing when SuperDuper says it's been cloning for 7 hours.
@DSHowell How about which even *could* have exceptions, given the current sandbox implementation?
@danielpunkass It would make sense for that to be the intent, but it's not the reality. Not clear what problems the mismatch will cause.
@danielpunkass Yeah, that's what I was getting at in my post. Apple's public line is that the exceptions cover what's been approved.
@jsnell It's not just a question of exceptions. There are valid things apps want to do for which entitlements don't exist.
