Unexpected benefits of iPhone 4S/iOS 5: way better at acquiring MicroCell, better auto-correction.

via Echofon

@irons Strangely, my parents have the original Time Capsule and have only had one corruption.

via Echofon in reply to irons

@nriley Interesting. I've usually heard that Time Capsule internal drive works better than TC USB drive, which works better than a Mac.

via Echofon in reply to nriley

@schwa Yeah. Corruption. Blocking other network traffic. Long pauses in apps.

via Echofon in reply to schwa

@danielpunkass Good idea. I could never get Time Machine to work properly over the network, though.

via Echofon in reply to danielpunkass

@rentzsch I also use a fanless toaster with a low-RPM drive, on a mouse pad for damping. Everything seems loud after switching to SSD.

via Echofon in reply to rentzsch

@rentzsch I like how quiet my desk is since I replaced Time Machine with Arq.

via Echofon in reply to rentzsch

@marcoarment I don't recall you addressing that it's suspected that The New Yorker loses money most years. Quality is expensive.

via Echofon

@scott_lowe You can do this with a bookmarklet or script. http://t.co/zy8JMJos Modifier key is a feature I'd like to add.

via Echofon in reply to scott_lowe

@marcoarment For me, Safari seems to be reloading pages *more* often for no good reason.

via Echofon in reply to marcoarment

@grantosborne I did, too. Nothing wrong with buying the better product.

via Echofon in reply to grantosborne

And the other benefit of using Skim to read PDFs: no annoying page-turn animation. (Yes, I know it's suppressed if you hold down Option.)

via Echofon

@danielpunkass Yep. It's writing to the plist that's not in ~/Containers. Gotta love the sandbox.

via Echofon in reply to danielpunkass

@leebennett No. I see that you posted and deleted a test comment, though.

via Echofon in reply to leebennett

@Stormchild Sure, you can check existence of menu items by name. Or just click them by position.

via Echofon in reply to Stormchild

@Stormchild I just run it via FastScripts. :)

via Echofon in reply to Stormchild

@Stormchild Put the whole thing inside: tell app "System Events"

via Echofon in reply to Stormchild

@Stormchild tell application process "Preview"
click menu item "Single Page" of menu "View" of menu bar 1
end tell

via Echofon in reply to Stormchild

@alan_schmitt Hmm, good idea. I'll try making Skim my default PDF viewer.

via Echofon in reply to alan_schmitt

@cocoadog It's easier to *see* FW400, but when you're feeling around behind the Mac/drive you can't force a FW800 in the wrong way.

via Echofon in reply to cocoadog

@Stormchild @Stormchild It worked in 10.7.1, I think. I made a "System Events" script and assigned it a key with FastScripts.

via Echofon in reply to Stormchild

@schwa Awesome except that I've seen the put in backwards.

via Echofon in reply to schwa

Maybe I can work around that with FastScripts.

via Echofon

No way to set the default view mode for Preview in Lion, so I had assigned a keyboard shortcut to "Single Page". Now that stopped working.

via Echofon

@jgpmolloy I had a corrupted search box icon in the Finder. OK, will look into whether there's a way to update the audio stuff.

via Echofon in reply to jgpmolloy

@jgpmolloy I don't think my speakers have drivers. The panic log seems to point to the graphics card.

via Echofon in reply to jgpmolloy

@jgpmolloy Do you mean like USB speakers?

via Echofon in reply to jgpmolloy

@danielpunkass It will disallow the switch if there's an external display; or prevent detecting a display if you switch to Integrated first.

via Echofon in reply to danielpunkass

@glgray Thanks, but I need my external display.

via Echofon in reply to glgray

@danielpunkass How did you do that? I'm assuming that won't work if there's an external display, though…

via Echofon in reply to danielpunkass

@glgray Yep, that's what I've got. 15-inch i7 MacBook Pro with 330M.

via Echofon in reply to glgray

Getting really tired of these kernel panics due to Apple's GeForce driver. Started with Lion, I think.

via Echofon

@georgedick I see. Guess I've been lucky not to have that particular problem yet.

via Echofon in reply to georgedick

@georgedick Well, but who am I going to call with no signal? Or do you frequently get bars without EDGE or 3G?

via Echofon in reply to georgedick

@otolithe Better than nothing, I suppose.

via Echofon in reply to otolithe

Siri regression: voice control of my music no longer works without a cell connection.

via Echofon

@danielpunkass Right. Although prior to now I had never selected anything…

via Echofon in reply to danielpunkass

@danielpunkass I suppose. Odd that it's intermittent, though.

via Echofon in reply to danielpunkass

I wonder what http://t.co/u9iq7TJX is doing that sometimes Safari refuses to save a page via Command-S but it does work via the menu.

via Echofon

@incanus77 I'm sure. (But even if they did, if the note shows up in an account in Notes, it should get synced to that account!)

via Echofon in reply to incanus77

@incanus77 I'm talking about Notes, not Reminders. But, yes, I just have iCloud.

via Echofon in reply to incanus77

@mjtsai No. But I have notes set to only sync over the air; otherwise it says there will be duplicates.

via Echofon in reply to mjtsai

Making a one-character edit on the phone causes the note to sync. But I need to see the notes on the Mac; won't remember to check the phone.

via Echofon

@simX Thanks, but I can see in the Notes app that they're in the correct account.

via Echofon in reply to simX

@Hunter I can't even imagine how to code a bug like this.

via Echofon in reply to Hunter

@Hunter The default account is the iCloud account. And I can see in the Notes app that the notes are all in the iCloud account.

via Echofon in reply to Hunter

All the notes I manually create on the phone show up in Mail and http://t.co/SekwVt9j; none of the Siri-created ones do.

via Echofon

Just realized that I don't need to mess around with /usr/bin/zip; I can just edit the archive directly in BBEdit.

via Echofon

@nriley No, but it seems to be discarding/reloading more tabs than before…

via Echofon in reply to nriley

@danielpunkass Looks like that would help. Thanks!

via Echofon in reply to danielpunkass

@_karsten_ Yeah, I was burning older music for the car today, too. It's extra fun when it's a mix of MP3 and AAC tracks.

via Echofon in reply to _karsten_

@_karsten_ I'm thinking it would save a few steps to buy from Amazon in MP3 format.

via Echofon in reply to _karsten_

@kevinhoctor Back when I was using Time Machine (over FireWire) it took way longer than 8 hours to back up 325 GB…

via Echofon in reply to kevinhoctor

Doing the old "change iTunes import settings, Create MP3 Version, make playlist, burn CD, delete MP3 version, change import settings" dance.

via Echofon

@Stormchild Find My iPhone didn't work for me at all the first day. Now it does. Didn't change anything.

via Echofon in reply to Stormchild

@danwood Could you send me some of the relevant log entries?

via Echofon in reply to danwood

4th restore. This time I'm testing the theory that calendars will sync without hanging if I submit to using iCloud.

via Echofon

@rentzsch A couple hours. Mostly due to poor signal strength, I think. (After activation, it found my MicroCell.)

via Echofon in reply to rentzsch

@rentzsch I got that, too, and it did activate eventually, but no e-mail.

via Echofon in reply to rentzsch

The Wi-Fi Sync seems to be killing my Mac's Internet connection.

via Echofon

Not sure what to make of Businessweek's Fadell update. It had been reported for years that he wanted to use Linux for iPhone OS.

via Echofon

@ianwessman Well, first of all, Windows only gets the key-value stuff, which will probably have Web APIs, too. Secondly, no MAS on Windows.

via Echofon in reply to ianwessman

Thanks to iOS 5, I've got a separate USB hub that's only for charging devices. Hopefully will reduce problems with hard drives on the bus.

via Echofon

@Stormchild Well, I'm an outsider who doesn't know what he's talking about, but a lot of it rang true to me.

via Echofon in reply to Stormchild

@kcase I see old versions of some apps, but not for the iWork apps where the requirements did change.

via Echofon in reply to kcase

@curtclifton No, it's in my home folder. Not encrypted.

via Echofon in reply to curtclifton

@curtclifton Not sure why, but I have no "Previous Mobile Applications" folder.

via Echofon in reply to curtclifton

@curtclifton Really? I've never seen any evidence of that.

via Echofon in reply to curtclifton

@Stormchild Yep, that sounds like the way to do it. ;(

via Echofon in reply to Stormchild

@Stormchild I've got a clone I can pull them from. But going forward iTunes is going to make it really difficult to maintain this setup.

via Echofon in reply to Stormchild

@joeldev That's exactly my point. No longer a way to sync to a device that you plan to keep on iOS 4.

via Echofon in reply to joeldev

iTunes deleted my old versions of the iWork apps, but the new versions don't run on iOS 4.

via Echofon

Apple's support download pages down (404) for the last hour but seem to be working now.

via Echofon

@marcoarment Wow. How many years have we waited for that?

via Echofon in reply to marcoarment

Got the dreaded "We are unable to completion your transaction online." Solution was to change the AT&T *billing* address not to be a PO Box.

via Echofon

@mikeash That's awesome. But what is this, Bungie remembrance day?

via Echofon in reply to mikeash

@petermaurer I actually really like the metal look on the original. The 3G/S looks kind of cheap, plus the gaudy side buttons.

via Echofon in reply to petermaurer

@petermaurer Hmm, I felt quite a difference between the 4 and the original, and find the 3G/S much more comfortable than either.

via Echofon in reply to petermaurer

@petermaurer It looks great, but don't you find it uncomfortable to hold compared to the 3G/3GS?

via Echofon in reply to petermaurer

@siracusa The iPad would be such a great fit for Myth.

via Echofon in reply to siracusa

dropdmg DropDMG 3.1 adds layout text boxes (w/ placeholder variables), faster disk image creation, shadow mounting, and more: http://t.co/zIMoUdB0

via Echofon (retweeted on 12:48 PM, Oct 4th, 2011 via Echofon)

@jsnell Yeah, the hidden mode is a strange design. Seems like it should be just a list of app names at the left and details at right.

via Echofon in reply to jsnell

Trying a new BBEdit workflow: MDI only for projects and smaller, task-specific project files rather than one huge one per logical project.

via Echofon

E-junkie's generally been good, but these "10002 Restricted Account" errors are a problem. http://t.co/IdDOwifr Temporarily switched carts.

eaglefiler EagleFiler 1.5.6 improves tag cloud, vCard display, adds scripts for duplicates and scanning, and more: http://t.co/WfajmEfl

Maybe my memory is failing, but I'm pretty sure that there's a digit missing when SuperDuper says it's been cloning for 7 hours.

via Echofon

@DSHowell How about which even *could* have exceptions, given the current sandbox implementation?

via Echofon in reply to DSHowell

@danielpunkass It would make sense for that to be the intent, but it's not the reality. Not clear what problems the mismatch will cause.

via Echofon in reply to danielpunkass

@danielpunkass Yeah, that's what I was getting at in my post. Apple's public line is that the exceptions cover what's been approved.

via Echofon in reply to danielpunkass

@jsnell It's not just a question of exceptions. There are valid things apps want to do for which entitlements don't exist.

via Echofon in reply to jsnell
