I'm not sure what happened, but Time Machine started working again today.
@kalkwarf Turned out to be an irrelevant question because they haven't made any software changes that they expect would affect the problem.
Called Apple to ask about the status of the Mini DisplayPort adapter fix. First thing the agent asked was whether I'd updated to 10.5.8.
