Back in iOS

I really don't understand why Apple didn't find some way to implement the iOS 5 iPad 'back' gesture on the iPhone/iTouch.

I fully understand the problems the smaller surface presents, but the gesture is such an elegant 'back' solution for power users that I really wish they'd worked a bit harder to find a way to implement that one crucial iPad gesture on the smaller form factor.
